3 Reasons Why Finding Your Purpose Is A Better Motivator Than Money, Power, Or Fame

Three Reasons Why Finding Your Purpose Is A Better Motivator Than Money, Power, Or Fame

German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once, “He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.” It’s a quote that resonates with people because it describes a powerful truth about what it means to be human: nothing is more powerful than a human being connected with his or her why. Nothing is more unstoppable and unbreakable than a human being connected to his or her purpose.

So often, society conditions us to believe that success is about accumulating as much wealth, power, and fame as possible. But in reality, connecting with your purpose is the most important step you can take toward greatness.

If you’re looking to get started on becoming super-successful, it’s important that you step away from those material goals for a second and discover your why. Discover your own unique way of giving to other people. Find a reason outside yourself—a cause greater than yourself—to attach your work to.

Connecting with your purpose is going to offer you more motivation than money, power, or fame ever could. And here are three reasons why:

1. There Are No Limits To The Human Drive When Giving To Other People

Your potential for material success is limited. Your drive to earn more money, power, and fame can only motivate you until a certain point. After you earn your millions or billions, get mentioned to Time’s most influential list, and grace the covers of magazines, your drive to earn more money, earn more power, and accumulate more fame may start to fade. Once you are as wealthy and well-off as it gets, your motivation earn more might disappear. Money-motivation is limited.

Purpose-motivation on the other hand is infinite. It never runs out. No matter how successful you become, you will never run out of ways that you can give, help others, and make a positive impact on others. Purpose-motivation never runs out.

Three great examples of this are celebrities Bill Gates (founder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation), Akon (founder of Akon Lighting Africa which is projected to provide solar electricity to six hundred million people in Africa), and Angelina Jolie (world renowned humanitarian). They each earned as much wealth, power, and fame as any of us could ever dream of and shifted their goals from earning more to helping others.

2. Legacy. When You’re Gone The World Will Only Remember You For Your Impact.

The second reason is legacy. Have you ever thought about how you want to be remembered by the world? If leaving a legacy is something that you want, accumulating money, power, and fame isn’t the best way to do it.

When the world looks back icons like Steve Jobs, Rosa Parks, Thomas Edison, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., no one ever remembers those achievers for their money, power, or fame. All that we remember is the technology, the innovations, the breakthroughs, and the positive impact that they left us with.

If leaving a legacy is something that you want, you have to discover your why. You have to shift your goals from earning more, to helping more people. The only way to become more successful is to provide more value.

3: Happiness. Giving boosts happiness. More Happiness=More Success.

So often society tells us that the key to happiness is earning more money, power, and fame. Postive Psychology books like The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor tell us the opposite. A happy state of mind boosts success and not the other way around. So if you want to hit your potential for success, you have to find happiness first.

And one of the best ways to find consistent genuine happiness is giving. Countless psychology research articles and books come out every year praising giving as a much more powerful source of happiness that material success. Giving does not necessarily mean giving of money or material things to others; it may mean providing enormous value to other humans through your work (Steve Jobs) Or using your profile or knowledge to improve others lives (Angelina Jolie) It might mean giving of your time to help someone in need, whatever you do, know that there is nothing more powerful than the principle of giving.

So if you want to be successful and consistently happy, the best thing you can do is discover your why. Find your unique way of giving to others. When you focus seven days out of your week on giving, you’re going to tap into that positive and motivated state of mind that you need to get ahead. And you’ll be on your way to super-success.
