Who is Beyonce?

No external introduction necessary. In her own words – “You can’t put your finger on who I am. I can’t put my finger on who I am. I am complicated. I grew up with a lot of conflict and dramas. I’ve been through a lot, just like everyone else. My escape was always music and I’m so lucky that that’s my job. But if I accomplished all of these things and had no one to share with, it would be worth nothing. You know, you need something real in order for any of this stuff to matter. You have to have something that is forever. Something that’s invisible.”

On Hard Work, Sacrifice, & Commitment:

“I know all of the hard work it takes to get to where you are. When everyone else is partying, you can’t drink. When everyone else is celebrating Thanksgiving, you’re at your house dribbling the ball or rehearsing in your man socks (lol). And it’s all about sacrificing, making choices, working hard, having drive.”

“I am a workaholic and I don’t believe in ‘No’. I don’t believe in ‘I need to sleep’. If I’m not sleeping, nobody’s sleeping.”

On Self-Development:

“I’m competitive really with myself, honestly. Every time I start an album I go and watch all of my performances and I try to figure out – ok, what is it that I could have done better or what worked? And really my references, I go back to myself and try to better myself so I’m really tough on me.”

“Progression as an artist is the most important thing for me. That is what success is for me. I feel like if I stay in one spot I’m not doing my job, I’m not growing as a human being, and I’m wasting time. And I feel like I always want to do something different from what I did in the past. I always want to challenge myself. I always want to have that nervous ball in my stomach before I go onto the stage. That’s how I know I’m doing the right job and it’s something still exciting for me.”

“I’m making mistakes and I’m learning from them. And I’m not afraid to make a mistake. I embrace mistakes. They make you who you are. I’ve never been afraid to fall.”

On Courage & Challenging Yourself:

“I absolutely get scared. Every time I get on the stage I’m nervous. I’m actually really scared when I’m not nervous because then I don’t transform into that person that people are used to seeing.”

“I feel very vulnerable when I perform a song for the first time. I may not say it, but I’m terrified … I like that nervousness. I don’t like it in the moment, but I know that it just means that I want it. And it means that it’s challenging to me and I’m doing the right job. You can’t be too comfortable, and too confident.”

“I’m no longer afraid of conflict and I don’t think conflict is a bad thing ‘cause I know that when you grow up, you learn a few things. You’re no longer afraid of letting go. You’re no longer afraid of the unknown. You’re no longer afraid of going to certain places in your body, in your mind, in your soul that may make you feel uncomfortable.”

On Finding and Developing your Passion:

“I think a star is born a star, absolutely. I know me, I was born to do what I do … I feel like we all are stars. We all have that. We just have to figure out what that thing is that we’re supposed to be doing in life.”

“The biggest thing I learned is I love to perform. I love music. I love what I do. I love singing in the studio and writing songs and coming up with video treatments to the point that during that year I do not count the 72 songs I recorded as work because it’s what I was born to do.”

On her career and what she does – “Forget all of the record sales, forget all the trying to compete, or trying to out-do yourself – You should be doing it just because you love it. And that’s what those young guys had. And that’s what I always want to have. I never want to lose that.”

On Self-Empowerment:

“Being a young woman I want to set the example that it’s possible for us to own our own businesses and own our own record labels and sometimes we don’t reach for the stars. Sometimes we are satisfied with what people tell us we’re supposed to be satisfied with and I’m just not going for it.”

“My mother always taught me to be strong and to never be a victim. Never make excuses; never expect anyone else to provide for me things that I know that I can provide for myself”

“I’m learning how to drown out the constant noise that is such an inseparable part of my life. I don’t have to prove anything to anyone. I only have to follow my heart and concentrate on what I want to say to the world. I run my world.”

In “Honor your Cocoon Time, Ray Lewis Inspired – Part 1”, a person’s cocoon time was defined as any time period someone is building themselves up and working towards something. Though Ray Lewis’s cocoon times had a level of adversity and grind, it was mostly the self-imposed kind necessary to achieve goals, glory, and greatness (GGG). The main challenge for him was not overcoming adversity; it was more about pushing himself to achieve GGG. Sometimes in life though, honoring your cocoon time is simply about not letting an adverse circumstance negatively disrupt your spirit and mentality.

This article explains how to battle through this type of cocoon time – a time defined by adversity. Honoring these experiences is less about action to get somewhere, and more about developing the mindset necessary to come out on top psychologically. One man who definitely came out on top of this battle is Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist Viktor Frankl (1905-1997), who survived through Nazi concentration camps for three years. Inspired by his thoughts from his book Man’s Search for Meaning, this article will delve into how to honor an adverse circumstance.

Adversity is a Joke

Viktor Frankl: “The attempt to develop a sense of humor and to see things in a humorous light is some kind of a trick learned while mastering the art of living”

Quote context – Upon arriving at a new concentration camp, Frankl was told by other prisoners that this relatively small camp had no “oven”, crematorium, or gas. So if a prisoner was to be killed, he would have to wait for a “sick convoy” to be transported to Auschwitz. Upon hearing this news, the prisoners were in a joyful mood and cracked jokes for hours.

After spilling milk or getting a paper cut on your finger, it can be a natural reaction to laugh or smile. Since you can’t change this adverse circumstance, you might as well take it in stride and not let it get you down. It’s easy for people to relate to those examples, but it seems when the adversity is stronger, the humor is gone. It shouldn’t be. In my part 1 article, Ray Lewis’s quote explaining his cocoon time started with, “I was smiling.” Having just realized he tore his triceps and had a long recovery ahead, the dude was smiling! Raise the adversity even more, and Viktor Frankl was laughing about the fact that if he would have to be killed, it would not be immediate since his camp had no gas chamber. Hilarious circumstances, right? No not really, but finding the humor in these instances put Lewis and Frankl in the right frame of minds to honor their cocoon times.

Attitude: Adopting an “it is what it is” mentality

Viktor Frankl: “Once the meaning of suffering had been revealed to us, we refused to minimize or alleviate the camp’s tortures by ignoring them or harboring false illusions and entertaining artificial optimism. Suffering had become a task on which we did not want to turn our backs. We had realized its hidden opportunities for achievement, the opportunities which caused the poet Rilke to write, “Wie vie list aufzuleiden!” (How much suffering there is to get through!). Rilke spoke of “getting through suffering” as others would talk of “getting through work.”

Viktor Frankl: “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”

In the same way that people view work as a life requirement and just something to be gone through, adversity and suffering should be viewed the same way. It’s funny – “it is what it is” seems like such a simple quote. But as people live their life, it’s evident that they don’t honor that mentality or truly understand it. Too many people let what happens to them affect their attitude, not accepting their current reality. I know you’re not supposed to talk about yourself as a writer, but who’s stopping me? To make a long experience short, I went close to deaf for a week and was unsure if my hearing would return. However, I chose my own way during that specific week. I said to myself, “Whatever happens happens and I’ll deal with it the best I can.” Since I didn’t have control over the situation, there was no point in worrying or developing a negative attitude about it. I stayed in the present moment and took an “it is what it is” mentality – not having false optimism and not having false pessimism. It is that simple really; A person can always choose their attitude.

Feelings: Adopting an “it is what it is” mentality

From Man’s Search for Meaning, but originally stated by Edith Weisskopf-Joelson: “Our current mental-hygiene philosophy stresses the idea that people ought to be happy, that unhappiness is a symptom of maladjustment. Such a value system might be responsible for the fact that the burden of unavoidable unhappiness is increased by unhappiness about being unhappy. [We] are not only unhappy, but also ashamed of being unhappy.”

It is crucial to not misinterpret some of the thoughts in this article as insinuating it is “bad” to mourn and feel sad at times. People must learn to take an “it is what it is” mentality with emotions and natural feelings – which is a very different idea than taking the same mentality with one’s attitude. As explained in the quote above, people have to be non-judgmental with how they feel. People should strive to control their attitude and thoughts, while simultaneously accepting any feelings and emotions experienced. One’s attitude and thoughts come from the brain, but feelings and emotions are under tight security in the heart. The fight to control your attitude can be won, but the fight to control your feelings is too much of an uphill battle. And that’s ok; It is what it is.

Using Adversity as Fuel

Ray Lewis on his past adversity: “I never forget it. And if you never forget it, then your motivation never stops … Some people take certain things and they try to forget what that pain felt like. I don’t. I take that same pain and I chase it every time I walk in a weight room. Any time I feel like I don’t want to get up or whatever, it just clicks in.” (Source)

Ray Lewis on his edge: “A lot of my fire comes from a lot of my pain … Every time I go on the field, I reflect on someone that was very important in my life that is not here no more. So that’s kind of my extra edge that I take with me.” (Source)

The process of honoring your cocoon time can be ongoing. Ray Lewis used his past adversity – his childhood poverty, growing up fatherless, the domestic abuse he endured, losing loved ones – as motivational fuel. He used his past cocoon times to push himself while in a present cocoon time to achieve GGG. Considering the severity of the adversity, and the type of person he is, it was beneficial for him to reflect on his past pain. Note that this strategy is not for everyone, meaning that I doubt Viktor Frankl was reminiscing his time in a concentration camp to motivate himself when he got out. When the adversity is that traumatic, it is generally best to move forward and try to forget the experience. Nevertheless, in some cases, reflecting on past cocoon times can be valuable to get through a current one.

Harmony of Actions + Thoughts

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” Those three things – actions, thoughts, and words – are what people have control over. As I explained in “Muhammad Ali Quotes Analysis – Proclaim your Greatness”, words can be valuable. However, their main value lies in influencing the greater duo of actions + thoughts. As emphasized in the part 1 article to this one, a commitment to your grind through action is most valuable when trying to achieve GGG. When your cocoon time is defined by an adverse circumstance, it is less about what you do and more about your mindset. I purposely referenced Ray Lewis and Viktor Frankl in both articles to hint that even across very different challenges, there are overlapping and consistent ideas. No matter what cocoon time version you find yourself in, your actions and thoughts must work in harmony to honor the experience most effectively.

Cocoon Time = Life ?

Reading these two articles, you may have wondered, “If a cocoon time is defined as any time period people are building themselves up and working toward something, or any time someone is going through adversity – then aren’t people always in some cocoon time?” Yeah, I would say so! People should constantly be on a self-development journey and working towards something, even if they aren’t aware what that something is. And if someone is stagnant and not working towards GGG, then they’re probably going through adversity. That’s all life is: bouncing back from negative circumstances and working towards positive circumstances. Honoring your cocoon time is really just honoring life itself.

One way to look at it is your life is made up of a bunch of cocoon times, either to achieve GGG or to overcome adversity. Through this lens, people are constantly creating a cocoon, becoming a butterfly, and then creating a new cocoon to go into. Another way to look at it is throughout your lifetime, you are in one single cocoon. And you have to honor your cocoon time by working towards GGG, embracing the self-development process, and maintaining the proper attitude through adversity. Remember in my part 1 article when I explained that honoring your cocoon time is an achievement by itself, regardless if GGG is reached? A parallel to that idea is honoring your cocoon time here on earth is worthwhile, regardless if you turn into a “butterfly” after life. People have a duty to honor life, and dominate the cocoon times along the journey. … I’ll let Viktor Frankl have the last word, lol

Viktor Frankl on life: “What was really needed was a fundamental change in our attitude toward life. We had to learn ourselves and, furthermore, we had to teach the despairing men, that it did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist, not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual.”

Honor your Cocoon Time, Ray Lewis Inspired – Part 1

People need to be more like butterflies. To simplify the process – caterpillars create a cocoon, and after developing inside of it, they become who they desire to be! To relate butterflies to people, too many people skip the cocoon part of the process. Or they go through the cocoon part, but don’t honor it by doing what’s necessary to achieve goals, glory, and greatness (GGG). Inspired by Ray Lewis’s thought process that he described in his book, I Feel Like Going On, this article explains how to go about honoring one’s cocoon time with a focus on working towards Goals, Glory and Greatness.

Below is an excerpt from I Feel Like Going On about this butterfly metaphor – Ray Lewis is talking about his recovery time after tearing his triceps during the 2012 NFL season.

“I was smiling because, throughout my career, whenever I had an injury, I used to call it my ‘cocoon time’… Really, [butterflies are] the most amazing creatures, capable of doing the most amazing things, and probably the most incredible thing about them is the way they’re able to transform themselves. They spin themselves this little cocoon and shut themselves inside. They can’t take their mamas with them. They can’t take nobody with them. They’re on their own, and they tuck in and wait. That’s all they do, just wait. And in the waiting, that’s where this strange magic happens.

These were the kinds of things I used to think about when it was time for me to heal. Told myself it was a gift, an opportunity to block my mind off, to wrap myself in this nest of hope, possibility, whatever you want to tell yourself is going on inside that tight cocoon. You can’t take anyone in there with you. It’s just you, alone, facing that long slog back to recovery. People called it rehabilitation, but I called it rejuvenation – the way I set it up in my mind, it wasn’t a hard road, but a journey. I’d tuck in and be by myself and just deal with it. I’d just wait – for this strange magic to happen. So when I started going through my surgeries, recovering from various injuries, I took the time to turn inside myself and really heal. Kept telling myself it was my time. Kept telling myself there was nothing to worry about – in fact, the only folks with something to worry about was whoever had to deal with me once I got back to the field, because I’d had all that time to rejuvenate. I’d come back refreshed, recharged, repurposed.”

When a caterpillar is inside its cocoon, it honors the process necessary to become a butterfly. It doesn’t rush through it and ultimately develops into a better version of itself. In order for people to honor their cocoon time – any period of time they are building themselves up and working towards something – there is a similar commitment that is necessary.

Butterfly Mentality: Have a complete focus on achieving Goals, Glory and Greatness (sacrifices required)

Ray Lewis speaking at the Powered By Me! Student Athlete Conference (2009): “Good is fitting in. Greatness is fitting out. Good is – ‘let’s go play video games all day. Let’s do everything that we need to do so we don’t push ourselves to our limit.’ Greatness is telling a friend – ‘I can’t do that today because I got a vision that I’m chasing’ … Inside of every vision, there are missions that you got to go on – missions that sometimes your friends won’t even go with you. So when I used to leave the house with 2 or 3 sweat bags on and 2 or 3 sweatshirts on and jog 20 and 30 miles, I couldn’t find another friend to do that with me … What would you give up; what would you sacrifice to be called great?”

Ray’s cocoon time in the quote above is his childhood, and he made the decision to honor it through not wasting time and prioritizing his grind. Talking to USC football players in 2013, Ray spoke of his decision-making mindset, “Does this decision influence where I’m ultimately trying to go? Because if it doesn’t, you got to get rid of it.” Playing video games was not going to lead Ray Lewis to the path of becoming an NFL player, so he decided to occupy his time productively instead. Of course it is unhealthy and unproductive for everything you do to be about GGG, so it can be necessary to rest or take small breaks at times. But most people take unnecessary breaks. It’s up to you to figure out what a necessary break and an unnecessary break look like when you’re in a cocoon time.

Ray Lewis explaining his relationship with his trainer Monte Sanders (2009): “I sacrifice time away from my family … Block our hours in a day. Some days we go weeks where we don’t pick up our phones and people take it the wrong way, but that’s all you can really do. You gotta’ block out your time; you got to (have) complete focus on what you’re trying to get done, and I think that’s what makes me and him a great complement.”

Ray Lewis speaking at a press conference the week leading into Super Bowl 47 (1/30/13): “When you talk about a last ride, I have devoted myself. One of my linebacker buddies was like, ‘Have you been out any of this week?’ and I was like, ‘No, and I’m not going nowhere’, because I only want my face to be stuck in an iPad. I want to know everything about the San Francisco 49ers that when I step on the field I can make my defense a better defense. That when we walk off that field, we know we did everything in my power and I know I spent every second on focusing on winning this game”

Whether it was during the NFL offseason or during the weeks leading into games, Ray Lewis honored his cocoon time by having an unrattled dedication to his GGG. Perhaps he could have gave in a little the week leading into Super Bowl 47 and entertained the pleasures outside of his hotel room. But then if the Ravens lost, could he honestly say he gave everything he had? To achieve Ray’s GGG – or maximize his chances of doing so – he made the commitment to honor his cocoon time in preparing for the game. No matter what your cocoon time looks like, it’s recommended to have a similar thought process – Not only to achieve GGG, but for self development purposes too.

Cocoon Time Paradox: All about Goals, Glory & Greatness, but not really!

Ray Lewis on his training and preparation for football (2009): “When you get away from just athletics, you realize that really you’re just challenging who you are, your will as a person to get out every day and never stop, never be satisfied. And that for me man, that’s where I’m at … My thing is I’ve never been the biggest, fastest, or strongest, but I just never met a man that would just flat out outwork me. So that’s always the thing I’ve always held onto is work.”

Embrace the process of honoring your cocoon time. Who you become along the journey is perhaps more valuable than the GGG achieved. Although Ray Lewis’ cocoon times throughout his life led to GGG by every measure accolade wise, the character he built from the process was the prideful piece for him. Ray stated to the London Warriors football team in 2012, “Nobody dictates what time I get up in the morning but me.” This idea that one should be more prideful of the grind and not the glory is a unique aspect of honoring your cocoon time. If you truly honor your cocoon time and come up short on GGG, it is ok. The self-development process of honoring your cocoon time is an achievement by itself. If a student studies all that she could for an exam and still falls short, she should still hold her head up high knowing she honored her cocoon time. That goes with anything; it’s more about having a butterfly mentality, rather than actually becoming one. Unfortunately, society, media, and people are too often focused on GGG when they should be focused on the grind.

Consciousness: Grind B4 Glory

Athletes like Kobe Bryant, Serena Williams, and Dirk Nowitzki – those types of men and women – they honored their cocoon times to ultimately become champions. They embraced what it took – the sacrifices in the dark, the commitment to developing themselves to achieve GGG. Right now, the world – people included – focuses too much on GGG and not the grind necessary to achieve that. Everybody knows it’s grind before glory – it’s not a secret – but there is an unconscious delusion out there of people striving for GGG without honoring their cocoon times. For some people, it’s time to wake up and be conscious of this fact. Put your focus into your daily grind, not your destination, and your journey will take care of itself.

I’m gonna’ leave you with this thought from Man’s Search for Meaning written by Viktor E. Frankl, who was an Austrian psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor. He will be the inspiration for a Part 2 article on honoring your cocoon time through adversity.

Viktor E. Frankl: “Don’t aim at success. The more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it. For success, like happiness, cannot be pursued; it must ensue, and it only does so as the unintended side effect of one’s personal dedication to a cause greater than oneself or as the by-product of one’s surrender to a person other than oneself. Happiness must happen, and the same holds for success: you have to let it happen by not caring about it. I want you to listen to what your conscience commands you to do and go on to carry it out to the best of your knowledge. Then you will live to see that in the long-run—in the long-run, I say!—success will follow you precisely because you had forgotten to think about it”

Proclaiming his greatness, even before Ali even recognized his greatness, was a strategic decision. And it can be a worthwhile decision for you too. Here’s why:

You are Pressured to Put in the Work to Become the Greatest

Keeping your intention concealed to be the greatest is fine in some cases, but there might not be enough pressure on you to get it done. By proclaiming it, there’s nowhere to hide and you can’t turn back. There’s no other option but to go all in on becoming the greatest. If you proclaim your greatness to your family or friends, they know and will soon be expecting you to personify greatness. Proclaim it on social media and the world will know. Proclaim it in school and your teacher and classmates will know.

Imagine you declare one day in math class to your teacher and classmates, “I will get a 100% score on the test next week.” You better believe you will do everything in your power until the test comes to get that 100%. You will put in the work because you’ll look like a fool to everybody if you don’t get it done.

In his memoir I Feel Like Going On, Ray Lewis notes that during his freshman year at the University of Miami, he proclaimed, “By the time I’m through, I’ll be the greatest player to ever play for the Miami Hurricanes.” Later in a speech to the Miami football team in 2011, he told them, “I did not say that because I thought I was better than everybody else. I said that simply because I was willing to put in the WORK.” Of course Ray Lewis probably would have worked his a** off anyway, even if he didn’t proclaim his greatness. But you bet after proclaiming it, there was no doubt he would put in the work. He proclaimed it and had to stay true to his word.

Note that the idea is to proclaim your greatness before you become great. It would be pointless to proclaim your greatness when you already are the greatest because people already see it. You don’t have to say anything. When you’re on top, people know. You don’t need any re-assurance from anybody, including yourself, to get yourself going to become the greatest. You already are.

Have a big goal you want to accomplish in the future? In some cases it’s best to conceal your intentions, but in others – proclaim it. Put that pressure on you and if you’ve got greatness in you, it will then come out when you put in the work.

Hesitations to Proclaiming your Greatness:

1. You are not willing to put in the work

Muhammad Ali was. Even though he “hated every minute of training”, he was still willing to suffer to become a champion. If you are not willing to put in the work and make the sacrifices to become great or the greatest, then be real with yourself and accept your mediocrity. Stop reading now; you already wasted a couple minutes of your time.

2. You fear you won’t become the greatest even if you put in the work

Rather than go the route of saying, “Don’t fear anything; Be tough; You can do anything”, I’ll acknowledge the reality that fear or doubt can be a valid feeling. If you realistically don’t think there’s anyway you’ll become great even through work, then proclaim something else. Maybe not “Greatness”, but ‘Goodness”. Instead of proclaiming you will get a 4.0 your next semester in college, proclaim you’ll get a 3.5. Instead of proclaiming a big goal such as lifting XXX amounts of pounds on a certain lift, proclaim the goal that you’ll lift 10 more pounds on a certain lift within one month. It’s tough to go from average to great, so it’s fine and probably even necessary to proclaim “goodness” first. But once your definition of “goodness” is reached, why not proclaim “greatness” next and see if you’ve got it in you?

3. You think it is selfish to proclaim your greatness

It is important to note that Muhammad Ali as a boxer plays an individual sport. In his case, he is in control of his greatness and his goal is to win as an individual in the ring. Therefore he uses “I”. But this proclaiming your greatness idea can translate to “we” also. Bill Russell is known as perhaps the greatest champion and unselfish player of all time, willing to do anything to contribute to his team’s success. From his book Russell Rules: 11 Lessons on Leadership from the Twentieth Century’s Greatest Winner Russell writes, “I was the most egotistical player they would ever meet. My ego is not a personal ego, it’s a team ego. My ego demands — for myself — the success of my team.”

If you work for an organization, proclaim the organization’s greatness and say “we”. If you are talking about your family, say “we”. “We” can have more impact actually because if one person in the group says it, everyone is suddenly pressured to put in the work to become the greatest or to reach that goal.

4. You don’t want to compete with or be compared to others

Even so, you still would want to be “The greatest …. version of yourself”, right? So proclaim it in that way. Publically perhaps, or just to yourself and hold yourself accountable to live up to that promise. If you’re that disciplined enough to keep promises to yourself and be private about your greatness, then so be it. In other words, if you’re like Jim Brown, sometimes proclaiming your greatness isn’t needed. In a radio interview from 2012, Jim Brown said, “I only compete with myself. I never got into competing with different people … Your actions speak for themselves. And if you’re comfortable with yourself, you don’t have to really get into who is the best.”

Note that this is not an “all the time” idea. Don’t be proclaiming your greatness in everything to everybody all the time. Be strategic with it. But if there is a goal you really believe you can reach and are dedicated to putting in the work, or need the type of pressure from a proclamation of greatness to get you dedicated, then proclaim your greatness. To somebody. To a group. To Facebook. And if you are using “we” statements when proclaiming your greatness, make sure the other people on your side would benefit from the statement too. Make sure they are willing to put in the work. Make sure they are capable of contributing to your teams or organization’s greatness.

Take note of where you honestly are in the lines above in terms of greatness. Are only your thoughts great? Are only your actions great because you’re not consistent enough with them to make them habits? Are your habits great, but you don’t personify greatness in terms of who you are? Greatness or becoming the greatest starts with thinking you have the potential for greatness and then proclaiming it. Then living it, day after day consistently, to where it eventually becomes who you are permanently. Becoming the greatest involves demonstrating your greatness at every step here. Muhammad Ali used these steps to become The Greatest; Will you use them next?
