The sunk cost fallacy is common in our lives from something as simple as a person letting unworn clothes clutter their closet just because they’re expensive, to people holding on to stock even after it has lost value.

According to psychologist Daniel Kahneman, the sunk cost fallacy is commonplace because “organisms that placed more urgency on avoiding losses over maximizing opportunities were more likely to pass on their genes.” Therefore the possibility of losses is a stronger motivator than the likelihood of gains.

Employment and Business

In 1956, the Concorde project began intended to design a supersonic airliner. The last Concorde flight was in 2003 despite the project having run into prohibitive cost overruns as far back as 1976. The endeavor would later be known as the Anglo/French misadventure and would be renowned for the valuable business lesson it offers. In the same way, most individuals base the decision to keep the business running based on past investments even when the financial growth is uncertain.

In employment, most people stick to dead-end jobs as they don’t want to jettison the sunk costs in terms of raises, promotions, and offers.

College students keep putting themselves into debt even when they are not making much headway in their degree. 2. Recognize that time, money, or any resource cannot be recovered, and it does not obligate you to continue investing in the future.

3. Realize sometimes the best decision is to quit. Though most perceive this as admitting failure, it is a sensible response when the goal is no longer viable. Keep working, but shift your focus.

4. In the words of Kenny Rogers, learn when to hold them and when to fold them. It takes more strength to admit you were wrong, there is no shame in making the best decision for yourself.

5. Finally, get the facts. There are instances where you want to stick it out in business or a career or degree but analyze the facts. Then make a decision based on the realities and not hearsay.

1. Identity is Everything

If you think you’re someone who makes $100,000 per year, it’ll be incredibly difficult to make much more. If you think of yourself as an overweight person, it’s likely you will stay that way.

Identity is probably the reason you can’t seem to get out of your own way. It’s like trying to speed up with the emergency brakes on. 

Most of your beliefs are formed in your childhood years, especially the first 7-8 years. You’re programmed by family, friends, and society for what you are and how you should be in the world. Luckily, you can change your identity if it’s holding you back.

Let me ask you.. What stories are you telling yourself on a daily basis? Do you ever slow down enough to actually listen to your own stories?

According to Psychology Today, up to 70% of human thoughts are negative. And 91% of your thoughts are the same as the day before! You can’t live an extraordinary life with negative mental chatter happening every single day.

One of the habits of high achievers is they have incredible self-awareness. They understand what’s going on in their head and can evaluate if it’s helping or hurting. Jim always says, “Get quiet and silence your mind.”

You can do this with a daily meditation practice and by being very intentional in your thinking. Like Tim Ferris found in his best-seller, Tools of Titans, 80% of high performers have some sort of daily mindfulness practice.

Let me ask…”Is perfectionism ruining your life?” One call with Jim and I realized my “perfectionism” was ruining my business.

In 2018 I struggled to wait until things were “perfect” before completing them. Subsequently, this led to procrastination and frustration as I couldn’t seem to get things done. 

My new motto is 70% done equals perfect. 100% done equals failure.

4. Time Management Creates High Performers

Do you ever wonder how some people make millions while others can barely pay the bills? Obviously, skills and education play their part, but a big component is time management. How you spend your days will determine if you reach your goals or not.

Let’s face it, if you want to find success in any area of life you have to work hard. Working hard is the minimum you need to get to the level of success you want.

But is “working smarter” the answer? Yes and no. While you need both, you might have to make a few other adjustments.

4 Reason You Aren’t Finding Success in Life

1. You Have Shiny Object Syndrome

You’re never going to find success if you are constantly going after whatever’s exciting at the moment. And in today’s world of social media, it’s so easy to do.

For example, I have an online business selling online courses but I met some people doing e-commerce (and making a ton of money) a few months ago. Instead of staying with my business, I tried to do what they were doing, even though I had no experience and ended up losing time and money.

It’s not that I couldn’t have been successful, it’s that I was thinking short-term, not long term. If you’re starting something new, make sure to see it through before going into the next adventure.

Don’t waste your time jumping around from one thing to another without first mastering one topic. Then, you can find ways to strategically find new opportunities.

2. You Are Talking With The Same People

If you want to find success but keep asking the same people for advice, chances are you’re going to get the same results. Trust me, I get it… It’s easy to hang out with people you’ve known for a long time. The inside jokes, the old memories, etc.

But with old friends comes old stories and the same advice. Unless they are leveling up like you are, it’s easy to hang out with the same people, have the same ideas, and not challenge yourself to find new ideas, and solutions.

Remember, working hard and smart isn’t enough. You have to immerse yourself with people doing what you want to do at a high level.

You can’t hang out with average people and expect amazing results. Seek out groups or people who make you feel inadequate (at first) so they can help bring you up to their level of success.

3. You’re Hate Taking Risks

When Elon Musk sold Paypal he made over 180 million dollars. Most people would retire tomorrow and end up on a beach for the next 50 years.

But not someone as extraordinary as Elon. No, instead he spent all of that money (yes, all of it) funding SpaceX and Tesla.

At the time, this was a monumental risk. SpaceX was the first private company looking into space exploration and electric cars were basically laughed at. But he believed in himself and took the risk. Now, he’s worth over 5 billion dollars.

I’m not saying you need to bet every dollar on yourself but I am saying to take calculated risks. Remember, if ou keep doing what you’ve always done, you’re going to get the results you’ve always got.

4. You Hate Change

Change is necessary for growth. And most people think they hate change when in reality it’s just the brain’s survival mechanism trying to help you avoid pain and discomfort.

Remember, your brain is hardwired to hate change, it up to you to push through fear, doubt, and uncomfortable situations to become the next best version of you. The more you do it on a regular basis, the better you’ll get and the less you’ll dread changing.  

As Tony Robbins said, “If you want life to change, you have to change. If you want life to get better, you have to get better. It’s the only way it’s going to happen.”

Start addressing these four issues and I promise you can find success. Quit trying to do the same thing over and over again expecting different results.

It took me 30 years to realize that comparing yourself to anyone else is a massive waste of time. The only person to ever compare yourself to is your previous self. Track your own metrics and only compare your results to your past.

One of my mentors, Benjamin Hardy, said to only think of the gain, not the gap. Meaning, when you want to see how you’re doing, only look backward, not forwards. By looking back and seeing how far you’ve come is much more empowering than looking ahead. Because the target is always moving ahead, making it feel like you’ll never make it.

Remember, who cares if someone’s business is making more money or has a bigger social media following than yours. Everyone starts out differently and no two people or businesses start in the same place.

At the end of the day, entrepreneurship is always a gamble. But if you believe in yourself and in your vision you can make it happen. It just probably won’t look exactly how you see it all in the beginning.
