Help Others – Not Because You Have To, Because It Is Right

There are good times and there are bad times. The times you will always remember and the times you wish you could forget. No matter how low you fall, remember that there is always someone lower who could benefit from a helping hand.

When Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years, his fire to change his country for the better only burned brighter. Mandela could have been forgiven for wanting to live a quiet and peaceful life, but instead he dedicated the remainder of his life to ensuring that his people do not go through the same ordeal that he himself had endured.

Never has there been a more powerful message of humility and it is an example that we should all follow. Yes, there are times when life is tough and gets you down, but the greatest mark of a man is now having ever fallen, but always getting back up on his feet.

Helping Those in Need

When you read the newspaper, watch the news or even take a walk down your street, you will always find someone that is in need; someone that isn’t enjoying the same benefits in life that you are, someone that for whatever reason has been forgotten by society. A small act of charity can go a long way in restoring faith in mankind.

Remember, however, that those most in need aren’t always the ones that show it most. Whereas the man living on the street may show visible signs of the hardship he is living through, someone else’s mental turmoil may almost be completely invisible. An expensive suit, fashionable haircut, the latest smartphone and sports car could only be serving as a cover-up for what they are really going through.

A Problem Shared is a Problem Halved

Making the effort to talk to someone has the potential to be a lifesaver that you aren’t even aware of. It is good to talk and, sometimes, it is all that we need in order to lift a weight off of your shoulders and approach life with an open mind.

If a friend, family member, colleague or anyone else tries to talk to you, all you have to do is listen. Don’t be the person who makes an excuse to walk away and then wonder why they never mentioned anything. Lending an ear is often more powerful than lending a hand.

What you can do

Helping your fellow man can be fun and should never be a hardship. You should do so not because you feel it is an obligation, but because you genuinely want to help. Taking part in a fundraising event such as a fun run, cake sale or holding a party can help to raise money that can be donated to a charity of your choice.

Alternatively, you can give up your time by volunteering in a homeless shelter or donating food and clothing to help keep those in need warm and nourished. There are many ways in which you can help, many of which require minimum effort.

There is little excuse not to help your fellow humans, because if you were in their shoes you would be desperate for someone to help you, too.

World renowned neurosurgeon James Doty’s most recent discoveries on combating depression, anxiety, addiction and loneliness among other supporting scientific evidence has revealed 1 critical attribute in order to find success and fulfilment in life.. Compassion.

But What Exactly Is Compassion?

Well as James Doty explains in his Huffington Post column;

“Compassion is the recognition of another’s suffering and a desire to alleviate that suffering. Often brushed off as a hippy dippy religious term irrelevant in modern society, rigorous empirical data supports the view of all major world religions: compassion is good.”

Ok, but what benefits can be gained from compassion? Well, A 2010 study from the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology indicates that participants who showed more compassion also showed lower blood pressure, heart rate, and levels of cortisol in comparison to less compassionate counterparts. These factors would contribute to less stress, greater recovery from disease, more energy, increased happiness and increased lifespan we can therefore conclude practicing compassion is sure to improve your life quality.

Dalai Lama & Jack Ma Agree

Compassion aligns with the philosophy for the increasingly popular and powerful practice of Servant Leadership

“The servant-leader shares power, puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible”

Which unlocks purpose and self belief in those being led. Leading to much higher performance values. Self Made multi billionaire Jack Ma founder of Alibaba, is a fervent practicer of servant leadership and owes the meteoric rise of his company to said practice. Servant leadership has a long history and has been mentioned in many sacred texts including the Tao Te Ching attributed to Lao Tzu, which states

“The highest type of ruler is one of whose existence the people are barely aware. Then comes one whom they love and praise. Next comes one whom they fear. Next comes one whom they despise and defy. When you are lacking in faith, Others will be unfaithful to you.”

Unsurprisingly the compassionate approach has many advocates His Holiness the Dalai Lama recently offered this clever remark on compassion;

“If we say, ‘oh, the practice of compassion is something holy,’ nobody will listen. If we say, ‘warm-heartedness really reduces your blood pressure, your anxiety, your stress and improves your health,’ then people pay attention.”

CEO Of LinkedIn Offers Insight

Jeff Weiner CEO of LinkedIn weighed in with his opinion on compassion when he tweeted;

Big misconception about managing compassionately is that it’s a “soft” skill. Most compassionate people I know are typically the strongest.

— Jeff Weiner (@jeffweiner) October 6, 2017

He went on to summarise compassion expertly in his LinkedIn plus blog;

“As the Dalai Lama explains, if you are walking along a trail and come along a person who is being crushed by a boulder, an empathetic reaction would result in you feeling the same sense of crushing suffocation and render you unable to help. The compassionate reaction would put you in the sufferer’s shoes, thinking this person must be experiencing horrible pain so you’re going to do everything in your power to remove the boulder and alleviate their suffering. Put another way, compassion is a more objective form of empathy. This idea of seeing things clearly through another person’s perspective can be invaluable when it comes to relating with others, particularly in tense work situations.”

It is better to go through the world as a compassionate person, with the ability to help others that are suffering without being crippled by their weight. Therefore, it is better to lead with compassion, not empathy. So whether you are wanting success in your business or personal life, we can see the power of compassion and it’s many benefits. If everyone on Earth practised compassion what a different world we would live in. What are your thoughts on compassion?

5 Things To Do When You Feel Like Giving Up

Feel like giving up?

Ups and downs.

Is life as simple as that? You fall, you get back up. Well easier said than done.

Your problems may seem insurmountable right now. You may not want to show up in life. You may not want to get out of bed, socialize, or do virtually anything. After failing over and over again, achieving your goals may seem impossible. But guess what?

You’re ONE step away from success. Failure is the price of greatness. And you’ve paid your dues. So why back down now?

This article will show you not just how to feel confident but dominate in your field. A change in attitude will shift your energy from passive to active, from fearful to curious, and from vulnerable to bold.

Without further ado, here are the five game-changing things you can do when you feel like giving up.

1. Get Curious About Your Fears

Fear blinds our vision. Curiosity opens the doors to new possibilities. All fears have answers hidden inside them. You just need to dig.

Michael Jordan once said, “My attitude is that if you push me towards something that you think is a weakness, then I will turn that perceived weakness into a strength.”

Dissect your fears with curiosity. Audit yourself. Audit your environment. Afraid of losing your job? Build your skills, dedicate yourself to the tasks everyone avoids and become irreplaceable, then ask for a pay rise! Living with toxic people? Get rid of them! Living in the past? Draw a line in the sand and DON’T look back! focus your energy on your vision, get out there meet new people, network do something you’ve never done.

Become curious about your fears and learn from your pain. There are so many great books out there. Turn off the TV and start reading, you will be amazed at what you can learn about you own method of thinking. Work on one weakness at a time and you’ll come out as a winner!

2. Take Care of Your Health

Noah Galloway, an Iraq war veteran, lost his arm and leg when a roadside bomb exploded and flipped the military truck he was driving. Later when he spoke with Tom Bilyeu, Tom noticed he was in incredible shape. Tom asked him how he was so fit after years of depression, he said,

“I knew that I was always happier when I was healthier”.

Despite being in a difficult spot, Noah knew how important it was to keep his body healthy, did he feel like giving up? Yes of course but he credits this with being able to make it through the darkness and into the happy and productive life he enjoys now.

Your health determines your happiness. And happy people perform much better than others. So take charge of your physical health by focusing on the following:

Diet – Food is your fuel. Replace processed foods with freshly cooked real food. Remove sugary snacks and fast food from your diet.

Sleep – Without sleep, you’ll be running on fumes. Sleep a good 7-8 hours each night that you can.

Exercise – Fitness or illness, you must choose one. Exercise at least 3 days a week.

3. Seek Help, You Aren’t In This Alone

When you fall into the abyss of hopelessness, you get stuck with a victim mentality. But it’s up to you to change that. Be brave enough to reach out to friends and family. Wear your heart on your sleeve and you will be amazed by the response. They’ll give you the courage and fortitude to keep going.

Also, learn from mentors and coaches. Even legendary athletes like Lebron James and Michael Jordan needed guidance to progress. A mentor with relevant experience will lift you up more effectively than anyone else. If you can’t find mentors, read the books written by them.

And finally, find allies. Find people who are on the same path and facing the same obstacles. Climbing up the mountain is easier if someone has your back.

4. Reconnect With Your Why

Noah Galloway, the army veteran mentioned earlier, says that you need to have something stronger than your fears. His ‘why’ was his children. Even after losing two limbs, he wanted to set an example for them.

He wanted to show his two boys what a man is, because that is what they would grow up to be. And he wanted to show his little girl what a man is, because that’s what she’d look for one day.

A practical way to know your why is to write in a journal every day. With some awareness, you can find the number one thing that matters to you.

When you feel like giving up, remember your why, your purpose. Your gifts and example can elevate other people. Don’t let them go to waste.

5. Take Small Steps to Build Courage

Courage is like — “A habit, a virtue: You get it by courageous acts. It’s like you learn to swim by swimming. You learn courage by couraging.” ― Brené Brown

Start taking small steps and you’ll find the courage to go further. This could mean having a weekly meeting with a mentor or perhaps working on your goals for 30 minutes every day.

When you move forward, your energy shifts. You are no longer stressed because you’re working on the source of that stress. You move toward your fears, and as a result, your fears lose their power.

Conclusion

Pain and friction are inevitable for growth and success. You have to go through the darkness to discover your power. Become curious about your fears and you’ll find the answers. Take the pain and turn it into your strength.

You are not alone. Take support from family and friends and learn from books and mentors. Whatever you lack now, you can gain by learning and taking action. Start moving forward, build momentum and see your confidence rise.

You can’t stop feeling fear. But you can stop feeding it.

5 Ways To Help Others That Will Lead You To Success

It’s true that by helping others succeed, you’re actually helping yourself succeed. That’s because the more you help others, the more they would want to help you out. Since it’s a win-win situation, competent people do it regularly. You should, too.

Giving without expecting in return is proactive. You’re confident that the good you can do for others will benefit others close to you and those good things you did will just come back to you.

But it shouldn’t be the reason for helping others. The best reason for supporting others is to find joy in making an impact in other people’s lives, and the rest will take care of itself.

Successful people, like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, are always looking for ways to help others. Unsuccessful individuals, on the other hand, would always ask “What’s in it for me?”

What they don’t realize is that helping others succeed would give you far greater payoff that what you’ve invested.

1. Share Your Network

That is, introduce people to other individuals, whom you think could hep advance their goals. So, when there’s a networking event, invite others. In this way, they could expand their networks, too.

Keep in mind that the more you open your network to others, the more it expands. As a result, you’ll end up receiving calls from unlikely people.

2. Teach

You can be pretty sure, you’re an expert at something. For instance, if you’re an expert in coding, social media or how-to do anything, someone will want to benefit from your knowledge.

By sharing your time teaching others to get them ahead is a simple task. When you mentor someone, you’re actually gaining new skills in return. As a result, you’re improving your capacity to solve problems.

Use your money for good, and help others:

3. Inspire People

Motivating others with pay would work for a short period. That’s because they would soon forget the “money, ” and they’re back in a situation that they would need another motivation to get to the next level.

But if you start inspiring others by respecting and letting them know you appreciate their contribution, you’re finding ways to motivate them in increasing their efforts continually.

4. Provide Constructive Criticism

Unfortunately, not all people like confronting their issues. Instead, they prefer dancing around them.

If you could provide an honest feedback constructively could have a significant effect on improving other people’s lives. One way to give someone an honest feedback is to ensure that you communicate with that person with having a mindset of caring about him/her and wanting to help him/her improve.

If you do that, people are more willing to open up to you, and they could give you feedback that could somehow help you improve.

5. Be Altruist

By putting other people’s needs first before yours genuinely works. Although not instantly, it gives you almost everything that you want over time.

The more you focus on helping others to succeed personally and professionally, the more your company or business succeed. In fact, you’d achieve more than you would have imagined.

It’s not easy to help others. Sometimes, it can affect your schedule, time and other resources.

But keep these things in mind and always remember that the more you help, the more you can benefit from it for your professional and personal life.

The richest people in the world are helping others and continue to pay it forward. It’s your turn to do the same.
