How To Stick To Your Goals When You’ve Lost Motivation

It’s easy to get excited when you have a new idea, a new plan for the future. You set your goals and start moving towards them. But, halfway through, for whatever reason, you focus shifts elsewhere and you stop being motivated enough to reach your destination. Why did that happen?

Pick Your Goals Carefully

Sure, it looked achievable at first, but now, after you’ve hit an unexpected bump, it looks as if you’ll never be able to reach it. A goal set too high can sometimes be the cause of giving up halfway through, so be very careful and think a lot about what you want your destination to be. Pick manageable goals and always take into account things that could go wrong, and be ready for things you would have never thought would happen. Don’t let the unexpected scare you away.

Another very good idea is to set some milestones on the way. Make your plan in steps and reward yourself whenever you’ve cleared one of the steps. This can make for a versatile plan, one you can take a break from after clearing a full step.

Force Yourself to do Things

This is a hard thing to do, for all of us. It’s awful when you don’t want to do something, but you know you have to for one reason or another. But these are crucial moments when you have a goal to reach, and you must always try to see the benefits of doing something rather than the effort put into it. Do this often enough, and the mindset itself will become a habit.

Track Your Goals

Tracking your goals is crucial to your effort. Failing to do it is the easiest way to lose interest and motivation, and simply forget why you wanted to do something in the first place. Make a list, when you begin, with things you need to achieve. The more broken down the list is, the better. Make a habit of checking that list every day, if possible, to constantly remind yourself what you are doing, and why.

Don’t Judge Yourself

If you fail to accomplish a part of the plan, which will most likely happen at some point in time, don’t judge yourself too harshly. Think about what happened and learn from it. Write down the steps you took, but ultimately failed, and analyze them one by one, to find out exactly why you were wrong. Even if you never get an answer, the exercise alone will keep you doing something, distracting you from the disappointment you will feel.

These are the moments your plan is most vulnerable, and you are most likely to just give up on it all. Sure, it takes a lot of motivation to get up after you fall, and calling a friend or a close family member for advice is not a bad idea. Even if they don’t have any practical advice, the support alone will do wonders to your morale and give you the motivation you need to try again.

Find a Partner or Mentor

Speaking of which, finding someone to walk the path alongside you will make things twice as easy. There will be two heads instead of one making plans and finding solutions to whatever issues appear along the way, and two hearts to support each other when you lose motivation. Set individual goals too, and track each other.

If you have someone with experience, guiding you on your path, ask that person to do the tracking. Someone you trust and who is invested in your goals will keep you motivated along the way, and offer advice when you get stuck.

Focus on the Reward

Be clear from the beginning what the reward will be and keep your eyes on the prize the whole time. Aim for something substantial and take into account the things you will learn along the way as well. The journey is just as important as the destination, but the biggest reward will be reaching your goal in itself. You will have taken a step towards making a habit out of achieving goals.

In the first article I gave you the basic outline to my “goal to success” formula. In this article I want to delve into why the language of goal setting is very important.

The first step in the “goal to success” formula is to ask yourself the what of your goal. What is it that you want. I mentioned that it needs to be something specific and very clear.

A general goal is non specific and will not be as easy to achieve. If the goal is not very clear the mind will not know what to focus on as even we do not know what we want!. Setting too general a goal is as bad as not setting any goal at all!

Remember the mind focuses on what you feed it so if you are not clear the mind will not know exactly what it must focus on!

Mind your language!

Although we may set a specific goal, your what needs to be framed in positive language. Our mind is a a somewhat complex beast, however our subconscious is quite black and white. It responds to the information it receives. Feed it positive thoughts and you will feel more positivity, feed it negativity and it will find and recall negative events. Therefore it is best not to feed the subconscious with negative language, thus when creating a goal you must ensure that everything you write down is a written as a positive statement.

Let’s take an example:

“I want to give up smoking” – sounds like a great goal, or is it? We are hard wired not to like giving anything up, it is something we don’t like to do. Not only this but to give something up has a negative connotation.

Although the goal is admirable it is likely that the person may not succeed in their goal. What will go on in the background is that the subconscious will find and recall instances of giving up something, and will realise that it is not a nice experience and may then prevent us from doing so.

Thus we have the important question – How can we frame this goal in more positive language? Instead why not say “I want to become smoke free” or “I want to purify my body and live a healthy life” – there’s no negativity there, it is all positive statements.

We could improve even more on this statement, by changing it to “I will purify my body and live a healthy life.” This is even more positive then the first statement. The will is a more definite word. We may want many things but that does not always mean we will achieve them. When you were a child you may have said “mommy I want a new toy” – your subconscious will remember this and replay the idea that you didn’t always get what you wanted!

Remember although it may sound strange the more positive we make a goal the better it is for the subconscious.

Visualize the goal!

Once your goal has been defined in positive language, you need to visualize the goal very clearly. Can you really see yourself achieving this goal? if so can you immerse yourself and your senses in this goal so that you can live an breath the goal?

What do I mean by this? I mean you have to be able to experience what it will be like to “purify my body and live a healthy life.” Right now I can see myself on top of a mountain with my arms outstretched, breathing deeply and looking out around me at the beauty of nature, as I take in the sounds that nature is playing, as i feel the wind whip around my body. I feel free, I feel exhilarated, I feel amazing.

That is the feeling that your what must produce. It has to be so powerful that you can change your state of mind at will and enter into this goal state each and every day when you visualize. your goal.

Commit it to paper!

You have to also make sure that you write out your goal. Research has shown that writing out your goal will also help you commit to it.

This goal statement must be posted in an an area of your house, office or other place you frequent, where you can see your goal each and every day. Ideally you will read your goal once in the morning and once at night. You will commit it to memory and begin to realise that there is no failure. Achieving this goal is the only way.

In my next article I will detail more on finding out the why and how you will break down your goal to ensure that you achieve success.

When I talk to people about goal setting I find out some interesting things. Many people plan what they are going to watch on TV for the week, where they are going to eat and what they are going to eat when they go on a Friday night. They take 6 months to 1 year to plan their holidays. However, ask the same person what are their goals (either short term or long term) and they will look at you as if you are somehow asking a weird question!

You’ve got one life, you want to have the best life and you don’t have a goal!

Let me ask you, right now, right this moment how many goals did you set this year and how many have you achieved?

In fact do you know where the goals you wrote down are? What… some of you did not even write down the goals. Ok we gotta talk!

It is said that those who commit their goals to paper are more likely to succeed and achieve them. The simple act of writing them down can ensure more chances of success. Of course if you write them down, that in itself won’t ensure success.

You need to be able to visualise and see your goals every day. You do this to remember that you have created them and to internalise them.

However just doing that is not enough to achieve them!

In order to reach those goals you need to take action, each and every single day you need to make sure you are moving at least one step closer to your goal. Look back at the end of each day and be happy that what you did that day is getting you closer towards your goals.

Re read the above, three very important points, once you understand those points you are closer to creating goals to success.

I am not talking about ordinary goals that you have read about. I am talking about goals to success.

You might be thinking “Richard what’s the difference?”

Let me tell you that a lot of what you may have read and be taught about goal setting is 80% correct, but there are some missing steps.

However, right now you are going to learn the “goal to success” formula.

1) Ask yourself exactly what is your goal? You should think about specifics. “I want more money” is not a goal, it’s a statement. “What I want is to earn $5000 a month” is much better.

2) Why do you want to achieve this goal? “I want to achieve this goal to help my family” – nice answer but you need to set the goal for you. Better answer would be “I want to earn $5000 a month so that I can have less stress in my life.” Not bad but let’s improve on it in point 3

3) Create the goal using positive language. The word stress in the goal above is a negative. If you are going to be looking at this goal each and every day you don’t want to see any negative words. Let’s rephrase this goal “I want to earn $5000 a month so I can live a happier and more fulfilled life, that will allow me to help my family and friends have a better life.” Whoa you are on a roll now, that is a pretty sweet goal, but heck we can improve it more

4) Set a timeframe. You have to know when you want to achieve this goal by, otherwise there is no pressure to do it. It’s a case of “yeah I want to do it but mañana is ok to start!” Therefore we want to modify the goal to read “I want to earn $5000 a month so I can live a happier and more fulfilled life, that will allow me to help my family and friends have a better life. I am going to achieve this by X.” Looking good! We now have a date when we need this achieved by so now we can start planning

5) The how. So great goal my friend, but how are you going to achieve it? Changing jobs? Getting an extra job? Writing a book? I have to know … “I want to earn $5000 a month so I can live a happier and more fulfilled life, that will allow me to help my family and friends have a better life. I am going to achieve this by X. I will achieve this by setting up my consultancy firm to service the X market.” See where we are going with this? Things are becoming clearer now.

We have the what, the want, the positive, the timeframe, the how, so we are there right?

Well nearly. One thing you do need to do is think about the who. Who else is part of this goal? Who else will be affected by my decision. I believe in holistic goal setting. Looking at all the parts that make up the goal. So one important thing you must do is think how this goal is going to affect those around you.

If you decide to set up your own consultancy firm will this take away time from your family? friends? will it give you more stress? This is one point that many people fail to consider. You may decide you want to build the perfect life for your family, but suddenly you achieve what you want, only to find you don’t know your family any more because you were never around.

Don’t be fooled thinking goal setting is easy. Sure writing out a goal is easy, but achieving it is different. Remember if it were so easy everyone would be setting goals and achieving them!

You see goal setting takes time to do initially. Knowing what you need to know before you start is important.
