At the beginning on our journey to success we all start off very excited and motivated. We don’t mind the amount of hours and the sacrifices for a better tomorrow.  Step by step you’re achieving your goals, nothing huge though, but still, it makes you ‘hungry’ for more and excited about what more you’re capable of. So you keep pushing and pushing for more. However after a certain time, those sub-goal achievements won’t give you the same level of satisfaction anymore as they used to be.  You desperately want to achieve something major, but it feels like you’re stuck at a dead-end road with the same minor-achievements over and over again and you begin to ask yourself: how much longer is it going to take? And it’s exactly at this moment, to re-evaluate your journey so far and to find out why you aren’t where you want to be.

Here are the 5 reasons that are holding you back from where you want to be in life:

1. Your productivity sucks

Productivity is often confused with hard work. Yes, you should work hard on what you’re trying to accomplish. However, working hard and being productive at the same time is a whole different story. No matter how many hours you put in, as long as you’re not working productive and getting things done, you’re wasting your time. For example, if you’re taking 3 hours of your valuable time to do something that could have been done in 1 hour, then you’ve wasted 2 hours. The only thing you’re doing is delaying the process of getting big results that you so desperately want to achieve.

2. You’re overthinking

Overthinking situations is something that can really get in the way on your journey to success. It can turn a pro-active person into a passive person, without the person even knowing it. It can create unnecessary problems and it slows down the process of your creative thinking. That’s why you have to understand that things don’t always have to go ‘perfect’ or the way you want them to be. Sometimes ‘letting go’ is actually a good thing. You can’t always control the situation. However, you can always control your response. The sooner you start to realize this, the faster you achieve your goals. So it might be your mindset that’s holding you back from those great achievements.

3. Too attached to the vision

People always tell you to have a vision for your life. What is it that you want to achieve in life? When you have vision of what you want to accomplish then no matter how hard the struggle is to get past an obstacle, you’ll find a way. However, getting too attached to the vision can make you forget about the journey, because always comparing yourself to where you want to be in 5 years with where you are right now can be really demotivating, since you always remembering yourself that you still have so many things to accomplish. This can make you doubt yourself and makes you forget about all the things that you’ve already accomplished.

4. Not taking enough risks

You want to become successful right? Then why are you taking actions in life that will set you up for a mediocre life? It’s great that you’ve started on your journey to success, but that doesn’t mean that you’re already there! There isn’t one successful person on this planet that became successful without taking risks. Trying to become successful is not something you can do from your comfort zone. You have to make risky choices, hoping that it will turn out for the better.  Taking risks is part of the journey to achieve success. Not taking risks is avoiding the opportunity for personal growth and achieving the maximum potential of your life and therefore holding yourself back from big achievements in life.

5. You’re in the wrong environment

I know we all have heard the famous saying by Jim Rohn about becoming the average of the 5 people you spent the most time with. However, just because you’ve heard it too often doesn’t mean you actually did something with it. If you find yourself in an environment that doesn’t support, motivate and inspire you to become the best possible version of yourself then change your environment! The sooner you understand that these people hold you back and that you need to surround yourself with the exact opposite of these people, the faster you get the point where you want to be in life.

In sum, it’s a good thing to take some time to reflect on how your journey has been so far, if you feel like you deserve more than what you currently have achieved.  Find out what has been going well, but more importantly, find out in which areas you could improve. When you know what to improve you can work efficient and precisely on the things that are holding you back. Because always keep in mind; your current situation isn’t going to be your final destination, it’s up to you which path you’ll take in life.
