How to Succeed in Life: Surround Yourself With Successful People
Everyone wants to know how to succeed in life. Sometimes, all you need to do is take a look at the people around you. The renowned personal development coach Jim Rohn used to say that
“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
Circle of Influence
And this is indeed very true. Our progress in life depends on our circle of influence. If we hang around lazy and incompetent people, then we too become lazy and incompetent.
As Tony Robbins says,
“Your income right now is a result of your standards, it is not the industry, it is not the economy.”
If you wonder how to succeed in life, know this: the truth is that our social circle has a major influence on the standards we set for ourselves.
If we hang around billionaires long enough, who dream up big ideas and convert them into reality, then we’ll be tempted to act and measure up to their standards by working on our own unique ideas and doing something gigantic. We will not shy away from taking risks.
How to succeed in life: Raise your standards, surround yourself with successful people.

Limitations Affect Our Self-Image
Perhaps the most unfortunate thing is we tell ourselves that we’re the present, limited version of ourselves. We say, “This is who I am. I am not good in relationships. I can only earn $4000 a month because I can’t (limiting belief here)”.
Our peer group ends up creating our limitations.
Why is this so bad? Because it is in human nature to stay consistent with how we define ourselves. If you define yourself as average, your actions will always be consistent with this belief. If somebody told you to try for the next level, you’d think that they don’t understand your “limitations”.
What we don’t realize is that the limitations are self-imposed. If we want, we can change how we define ourselves and start living a new, empowering story.
How to succeed in life: Break through your limitations, live with people don’t have limitations, who are successful and aim high.
The Strangest Secret
The Godfather of personal development, Earl Nightingale wrote a very famous book known as “The Strangest Secret”. The core premise of his teachings in this book was that:
“We become what we think about.”
Sounds too simple? Take a moment to reflect on how you’ve been thinking in the past few days. Chances are, you’ve been thinking negative, underestimating your own abilities.
So always remember,
If you think in positive terms, you get positive results. If you think in negative terms, you get negative results.
How to succeed in life: Develop positive thinking by surrounding yourself with successful and positive people.
Success is A Habit
In his book, Nightingale explained that some people have that magic touch, everything they touch turns into gold. So a successful person continues to be successful because of his positive thinking patterns.
So if the core truth of success lies in our thinking, then it is an absolute must that we live around people who are high on life and think in positive terms in career, relationships, and all other areas of life.
How to succeed in life: Make success a habit by associating with those who have “that magic touch”.
Unsuccessful people, on the other hand, are complacent, lazy, ignorant, unconfident, and have a pessimistic view of life. They believe that they are not lucky or not gifted enough to be successful. If we live with them for long enough, this thinking will seep into our minds and hamper our personal growth.
So in the end:
You can either live with people who inspire you, push you, make you laugh, and encourage you to dream bigger, or with those who complain, remain stuck in problems, and pull you down to their level.
