One of the most crucial factors for a successful business is through the collaboration of its people. As cliche as it may sound, an employee is considered the most valuable assets of any business. People in the companies execute processes, plans, and strategies towards a business’ goal.

Psychology and Business: Why It’s Good To Understand People

To show that such mantra is real, you need to understand the people working with you, and for other reasons such as the following:

1. You can become an effective leader

Understanding people or the psychology of employee in the business is key to becoming an effective leader. Because of this, a lot of graduate schools offer business and applied psychology, such as the University of Southern California, to become a successful leader.

If you’re a leader with a vision, you want your people to understand and share this vision as part of your leadership. To achieve your goal, you need to understand and build a responsive partnership with your people. One way to understand them is to understand their needs:

Informational needs – It covers the knowledge and facts necessary for the development of an employee. For instance, the leader must know whether his members are knowledgeable about writing a newsletter, running a meeting, or managing business operations. When you know what they lack, you’ll think of ways to let them learn such knowledge relative to your business.

Personal needs – These tangible needs cover the person’s need for care, understanding, and appreciation. As a leader, you must show gratitude and care towards your employees through simple notes or verbal acknowledgment.

Physical needs – In an organization, these needs include more staff or more money for your organization. When your business has enough staff, employees can be more productive without being pressured to do more.

When you know those needs, it gives you these advantages:

Appropriate response will be implemented and, as a leader, its fulfillment will help you reach your shared goals.

Belief in your leadership will be reinforced.

Your needs will also be met by your employees when they know you do your part to provide for their essentials.

2. You can resolve conflict

In any business, conflicts are normal. But their real causes must be understood to resolve such disputes properly. One of the reasons for arguments is the clashing of personality types or behaviors between different people. The conflict can occur when a person’s authority, beliefs, or values are challenged. To turn this conflict into a positive energy or outcome, one must find its underlying cause.

When you know the reason for such conflicts, you’ll understand how a person reacts to such causes. For instance, a person might be okay with dirty jokes but it might offend other people. As an individual, understanding the other individual’s preferences or beliefs can help you gauge yourself whether you’re the reason for such conflicts. Moreover, when you know other people, you’re more likely to be aware of what approach to use in resolving such conflicts.

Understanding personality types will also help you communicate better so you can come up with a resolution. Through this, you can even avoid such conflicts from happening again.

3. Boost your sales

Since one of the primary goals of a business is to make sales, understanding people or customers should be a tool to achieve this goal. One way to understand people is by applying psychological strategies like persuasion and influence. When you know your customers, you’ll more likely find the best way to communicate and sell to them.

Here are the different types of customers you need to understand to plan your best approach:

Loyal customers – These are the people who heavily value your business product or service. To retain and avoid losing them, you must consider them a priority for your company. You can collect their feedback and input as part of your decision making process.

Impulse customers – Since these types of customers don’t have a specific list of what to purchase, you must update them with your new products to generate more sales.

Discount customers – These customers don’t purchase items at full price, but when you want your inventory to be over, offering them markdowns can help you with it.

Need-based customers – These are customers who only enter shops to buy specific needs. Since they’re hard to upsell, you need to build positive interaction to convert them to returning customers.

Conclusion: Psychology and Business

When you’re in business, understanding different types of people is a must for you to survive. Without such understanding, conflicts among your people and doom of your business are possible results. But when you know how to apply the proper approach in dealing with various behaviors and personalities, you’ll master a skill essential for an entrepreneur, leader, or employee.

Wouldn’t it be great to be a mind reader?

If you take a glance at research conducted by UCLA, you will see that just 7% of communication is based on the actual words spoken.

The rest of the 38% is judged from the tone of the voice and 55% from body language.

Therefore understanding the unspoken 55% should be a prominent objective.

How can you do that?

Here are the cues you need to look for..

Psychological Tricks That Will Make You A Mind Reader

Mirroring Technique | Mind Reader

Tony Robbins often recites how the late great psychologist, Milton H. Erickson taught how to build rapport using the mirroring method.

If you notice someone around you doing exactly what you do, for example, when you cross your legs they do the same. You scratch your nose, they follow suit.

If you notice this, don’t get irritated!

Rather, understand this is a great sign. People imitate other’s body language unconsciously when they feel a strong bond with the person who is in front of them.

It actually indicates that the conversation is really going well and the other person is engaged in what you are saying.

But the most powerful part of this technique is that you can mirror someone else. People like people who are like themselves.. Mirroring someone can actually make them subconsciously more interested in you, even without speaking!

If there is someone you are trying to have a connection with, sit how they are sitting and imitate what they are doing with their arms and legs. You will notice that they are much more receptive to you!

Shaking Leg, Shaking Mind | Mind Reader

Over time, experts have noted that shaking legs show anxiety and vexation. Legs cover the largest area of our bodies. However, when the legs are moved, it often goes unnoticed.

So, people think that if they shake their legs, that it won’t be registered consciously and therefore not judged.

If you come across someone who is trembling their leg/s it’s a sure sign of anxiety and/or trepidation.

Crossed Legs and Hands Signify Disagreement | Mind Reader

If you notice someone you are speaking to is crossing their legs or arms during the conversation, it means that they are not in agreeance with what you’re saying.

Even if you feel that the conversation is going pleasantly, such a gesture means in their mind, they are not concurring with you.

Crossed arms is the more defiant of the two stances. Crossed arms is a display of intimidation. Someone crossing their arms during a conversation means they don’t agree with you and they feel threatened. See if you can sway them with your words to relax, this will help you know if someone is comfortable and willing to negotiate with you.

Another importance indicator is the direction in which the person’s body is facing. If they are sat opposite you with their legs pointed straight at you it means they are interested in what you are saying, or even in you! If their body is turned away from you, this is a sign that they aren’t interested and they are subconsciously ready to leave.

Excessive Nodding, Yes Means No | Mind Reader

If you are asking someone to complete a task and you see that the person is nodding unnecessarily.

What does it mean?

In psychological language, it states that they are not sure about whether or not they will able to complete the work.

If someone doubts his or her ability to follow an instruction, they nod way too much.

Next time you are issuing difficult instructions, if the person is constantly nodding it is a sign they do not fully understand, but aren’t comfortable enough to ask.

So slow down & explain in a different way. If you tell them you know they don’t understand they will think you’re a mind reader.

Defensive Raised Eyebrows | Mind Reader

When someone is raising his/her eyebrows, it means that they are either surprised, worried or scared. Someone will not simply raise their eyebrow while having a casual conversation. So, if anyone who is talking to you raises his/her eyebrows, it means that they are not comfortable with the conversation.

Commonly they are feeling intimidated in some way, raised eyebrows are a sign that you are in control of the conversation.

Biting Nails, Racing Mind | Mind Reader

It’s well known that nail biting is a sign of racing thoughts or stress. So, if you see someone is doing that while you’re talking to them, try and change the topic to something completely different. A quick topic change can have a calming effect on a person with racing thoughts as it make their brains reset, try it out today, as you change the topic watch as they lower their hand.

Then you will know you are truly mind reader!

Other signs of stress can be a clenched jaw, a tightened neck or a furrowed brow.

Use these techniques to gain an edge at work, during negotiations, or even while trying to impress someone romantically. Soon you will be a master at reading people and people will wonder if you’re a mind reader.

If you want to become a champion in any arena you need to have the right mindset for success. Dr. Bob Rotella, “America’s Premier Sports Psychologist” talks in depth about the champions mindset in the NYT best-selling book, How Champions Think: In Sports and Life.

Dr. Bob Rotella has had the privilege to work with elite athletes & executives around the world for decades. The longer he worked with elite individuals, the more he realized how much they have in common.

Use these top five lessons to learn how champions think and start creating the life you truly want;

1. Build Your Self Image | How Champions Think

As Dr. Maxwell Maltz said in his epic personal development book, Psycho-Cybernetics, “The self-image is the key to human personality and human behavior. Change the self-image and you change the personality and the behavior.”

Dr. Bob Rotella agrees and speaks at length of the importance of building a positive self-image. To be a champion, you have create the image of a winner before it actually manifests in your life. You can’t expect it to happen overnight either.

To build a self-image you need to first identify who you want to become. Then, adopt and practice the habits and rituals of that person. Make a plan each day to get one step closer to your future self.

The more promises you keep to yourself, the more you will build your self-image and ultimately self-respect over time.

2. Channel a Growth Mindset | How Champions Think

Success at extraordinary levels is impossible with a fixed mindset. To be a true champion in life, you have to adopt a growth mindset. You have to believe that you can overcome anything, learn the skills, and produce the results you want.

When you channel a growth mindset, you can take on the two qualities Dr. Bob says is necessary to become a champion — optimism and confidence.

3. Trust The Process | How Champions Think

Champions understand that success isn’t a straight line. They set a goal, make a plan, and trust the process.

When things go wrong they don’t have shiny object syndrome. Instead, they stay committed to the plan and process.

As Eric Thomas aka “ET The Hip Hop Preacher” said, “Trust the process, don’t rush the process.”

Champions accept failure as a stepping stone to success. They don’t see a failure as a dead end, instead, they use it as a learning lesson.

Champions in any arena of life know that is an e a choice to take pride in their persistence and patience. They understand setbacks are inevitable. But they don’t take them personally or let them diminish their belief in themselves.

To think like a champion you have to use failure as fuel to take your life to the next level.

5. Surround Yourself With People Who Make You Better

No one ever accomplished anything great alone. Champions know they need a team to make them compete at the highest level.

Look around in business and sports and it’s evident. Arguably the most successful hedge fund manager ever, Ray Dalio, has worked with high-performance coach Tony Robbins for 30 years. Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, and Tom Brady all surround themselves with the best coaches and trainers in the world.

If you want to be a champion you have to guard your inner circle and make sure everyone is helping you towards your goals.

Remember, if you want to be a champion in life, you have to start by creating the right image of yourself and pair it with the right mindset. Once you start there the rest of the process will be much easier.

The Psychology Of Success As Told By These 5 Entrepreneurs

When you ask most people what it takes to become successful, they’ll tell you that success comes from hard work. The psychology of success is often overlooked entirely. While yes, hard work is part of the equation, they are missing a large part. You can never become successful if you don’t have the right mindset.

The right mindset cures everything. Your mindset will determine if you’re successful or if you’re unsuccessful. Your mindset will tell you that you’re a failure and you should just give up or that you’re on the right track to success. Which voice are you listening too?

Becoming an entrepreneur will be the hardest challenge of your life because you’re becoming a different person than everyone else. When that happens, you will question yourself. Are you on the right path? Why don’t you just work for someone else? If you continue to ask yourself these questions, you will lose. When you have the right mindset, no matter what you face, you will come out the other side.

There are five entrepreneurs who developed the right mindset that has allowed them to succeed in their respective fields.

Grant Cardone – Psychology Of Success

Grant Cardone is a New York Times Best-Selling Author, creator of Grant Cardone TV, CEO of four businesses, and currently has over $400 million worth of real estate holdings.

Working a job he hated was the driving force behind Grant shifting his mindset. He became good at the job he hated. Grant continued to focus on self-improvement and because of this, he was able to raise his monthly income through the sales commission job he was working.

Grant understood that if he wanted to change his mindset about making money, all he needed to do was figure out ways to produce more money. By figuring out more ways to produce, he was able to change his mindset because he focused solely on growing his income.

When you’re training your mindset for success, what can you put all your focus into that’ll allow you to achieve success? For Grant, it was into producing income. For you, it could be getting more clients.

It’s easy to stretch yourself thin and focus on too many ideas instead of one big idea. It’s a lot easier to become successful at one thing than it will ever be to be successful at multiple things. What can you focus on today that will help achieve your bottom line tomorrow?

Melyssa Griffin – Psychology Of Success

Melyssa Griffin is the founder of melyssagriffin.com where she gives you advice on how to start a successful online business and host of the pursuit with purpose podcast.

Melyssa’s mindset changed when she realized that telling herself she couldn’t do something would not work out. If she wanted to get to the next level in her life, she knew that even if she didn’t know how to do something; she was going to figure it out no matter how long it would take her.

There are so many ways you can learn something in today’s day and age that telling yourself you can’t do something is ludicrous. If you want to make six-figures, do your research on how others made six-figures. What habits are they doing different from the ones you have? How do they plan their day? What type of work are they doing? The answer to every question is there if you’re willing to do the research. Just because you don’t know how to do something shouldn’t hold you back from achieving whatever you set your mind too.

Being an entrepreneur, Melyssa realized there are tons of negative events that can take place. To counteract the negative events, Melyssa would take to gratitude journal, writing the positive events taking place in her life. What you’re essentially doing is creating a positive perspective view of the world for yourself.

What research can you do today that’ll help enhance your mindset tomorrow?

Alan Burak – Psychology Of Success

Alan Burak is founder of renowned investment firm, Never Alone Capital.

From an early age, Alan learned the art of willpower. Alan has gone broke twice and has come back both times. He didn’t give up on his dreams of starting a business despite the setbacks he faced multiple times.

Alan understood that if he wanted something, it had to be a must. He couldn’t just kinda want it. Too many people just kinda want it. And do you notice that most people aren’t where they want to be in life? If you’re not ready to go all in and give your idea or dream 100%, you will never succeed because the second you doubt yourself you will fail. Put in the work every single day whether you feel like it or not and don’t leave any free time to doubt yourself.

When he wasn’t feeling fulfilled in his life, Alan turned to self-development, but more importantly, psychology to get him out of the current state he had felt trapped in. Alan realized that success doesn’t start with everything going on around you, it starts with what’s already inside of you. You already have the mindset inside yourself you need to become successful and it’s up to you to cultivate that mindset.

The change started in Alan’s mindset when he came across the saying, “Life happens for us, not to us.” Everything that happens in your life is an opportunity to grow, are you going to take advantage of it?

Ryan Holiday – Psychology Of Success

Ryan Holiday is the best-selling author of multiple books including Ego Is The Enemy, and The Obstacle Is The Way and he is the former marketing director at American Apparel.

When Ryan was trying to cultivate the mindset that would lead him to success, he knew that he had to cast his ego to the side. You can get an inflated ego when you start a business because you accumulate a little success and think that’s the way it will always go. This is a mindset set trap for yourself because there will come a day when you encounter failure and you won’t know how to deal with it. No matter how much success you achieve, keep pushing forward because you never know when you might deal with a hardship.

While not having an ego can lead you to the right mindset, you need to focus on building confidence for yourself. Confidence comes from taking action every day. You will not have any confidence if you sit and watch TV every day and why should you if you do that? You know how much work you’re actually putting in. Confidence is something you earn.

On Ryan’s conquest to motivate himself, he focuses on a practice called bulletproofing himself. What him is doing is asking himself if he would be okay with the worst possible outcome that could come to him. If he’s okay with it, he’ll continue to carry on and keep doing the work he was already previously doing. What’s the worst that could happen to you from following your dreams?

David Goggins – Psychology Of Success

David Goggins is a retired Navy Seal and an ultra-endurance athlete who has ran some of the toughest races in the world.

For Goggins, it’s simple, you do what you want don’t to do and keep doing it. There were numerous low points in his life, yet he didn’t let that stop him from becoming successful. He thrived on overcoming challenges and adversities. Goggins knew with each challenge he was able to overcome, it would make him mentally tougher.

What can you do to make yourself mentally tougher? Are you taking the easy way or actually putting in the work? When you take the easy way, you will never get mentally tougher. You become mentally tougher overtime with each difficult task you accomplish. Follow the advice Goggins gives and do what you don’t want to do on a daily basis.

Your mindset could be the one thing holding you back from becoming a successful entrepreneur. Don’t keep telling yourself you will become mentally tougher or you’ll do the hard tasks later because eventually there won’t be another day for you to do those hard tasks. You should focus on what you can control today.

Ask yourself, “What’s something I’ve been putting off?” Why have you been putting it off and what are you going to do to change that? It’s up to you to create a better life for yourself because no one will help you! And that starts with cultivating the right mindset.
