Wouldn’t it be great to be a mind reader?

If you take a glance at research conducted by UCLA, you will see that just 7% of communication is based on the actual words spoken.

The rest of the 38% is judged from the tone of the voice and 55% from body language.

Therefore understanding the unspoken 55% should be a prominent objective.

How can you do that?

Here are the cues you need to look for..

Psychological Tricks That Will Make You A Mind Reader

Mirroring Technique | Mind Reader

Tony Robbins often recites how the late great psychologist, Milton H. Erickson taught how to build rapport using the mirroring method.

If you notice someone around you doing exactly what you do, for example, when you cross your legs they do the same. You scratch your nose, they follow suit.

If you notice this, don’t get irritated!

Rather, understand this is a great sign. People imitate other’s body language unconsciously when they feel a strong bond with the person who is in front of them.

It actually indicates that the conversation is really going well and the other person is engaged in what you are saying.

But the most powerful part of this technique is that you can mirror someone else. People like people who are like themselves.. Mirroring someone can actually make them subconsciously more interested in you, even without speaking!

If there is someone you are trying to have a connection with, sit how they are sitting and imitate what they are doing with their arms and legs. You will notice that they are much more receptive to you!

Shaking Leg, Shaking Mind | Mind Reader

Over time, experts have noted that shaking legs show anxiety and vexation. Legs cover the largest area of our bodies. However, when the legs are moved, it often goes unnoticed.

So, people think that if they shake their legs, that it won’t be registered consciously and therefore not judged.

If you come across someone who is trembling their leg/s it’s a sure sign of anxiety and/or trepidation.

Crossed Legs and Hands Signify Disagreement | Mind Reader

If you notice someone you are speaking to is crossing their legs or arms during the conversation, it means that they are not in agreeance with what you’re saying.

Even if you feel that the conversation is going pleasantly, such a gesture means in their mind, they are not concurring with you.

Crossed arms is the more defiant of the two stances. Crossed arms is a display of intimidation. Someone crossing their arms during a conversation means they don’t agree with you and they feel threatened. See if you can sway them with your words to relax, this will help you know if someone is comfortable and willing to negotiate with you.

Another importance indicator is the direction in which the person’s body is facing. If they are sat opposite you with their legs pointed straight at you it means they are interested in what you are saying, or even in you! If their body is turned away from you, this is a sign that they aren’t interested and they are subconsciously ready to leave.

Excessive Nodding, Yes Means No | Mind Reader

If you are asking someone to complete a task and you see that the person is nodding unnecessarily.

What does it mean?

In psychological language, it states that they are not sure about whether or not they will able to complete the work.

If someone doubts his or her ability to follow an instruction, they nod way too much.

Next time you are issuing difficult instructions, if the person is constantly nodding it is a sign they do not fully understand, but aren’t comfortable enough to ask.

So slow down & explain in a different way. If you tell them you know they don’t understand they will think you’re a mind reader.

Defensive Raised Eyebrows | Mind Reader

When someone is raising his/her eyebrows, it means that they are either surprised, worried or scared. Someone will not simply raise their eyebrow while having a casual conversation. So, if anyone who is talking to you raises his/her eyebrows, it means that they are not comfortable with the conversation.

Commonly they are feeling intimidated in some way, raised eyebrows are a sign that you are in control of the conversation.

Biting Nails, Racing Mind | Mind Reader

It’s well known that nail biting is a sign of racing thoughts or stress. So, if you see someone is doing that while you’re talking to them, try and change the topic to something completely different. A quick topic change can have a calming effect on a person with racing thoughts as it make their brains reset, try it out today, as you change the topic watch as they lower their hand.

Then you will know you are truly mind reader!

Other signs of stress can be a clenched jaw, a tightened neck or a furrowed brow.

Use these techniques to gain an edge at work, during negotiations, or even while trying to impress someone romantically. Soon you will be a master at reading people and people will wonder if you’re a mind reader.

Most of us grumble and groan when we get stuck viewing a TV advertisement. But once in a generation one comes along that not only gets our attention; it shapes our destiny..

Over the years there have been many classics that make us laugh, cry, and ponder life a little more deeply. These two timeless tour de forces take it one step farther. They help us contemplate the vastly important role we play in shaping our own success. Enjoy these flashback broadcasts that teach us exactly how to step forward in life….

‘Think Different’ Original: Apple, 1997

Twenty years ago Apple experienced incredible growth, tripling their stock price in just one calendar year.

Twenty-one years ago Apple was in trouble and headed towards failed obscurity.

What changed in those 12 months?

It was 1997. Co-founder Steve Jobs had been back at the company for just one year after having been ousted 12 years prior due to poor sales of his Macintosh concept. Now he was interim CEO of a company that was experiencing declining profits and a reputation for making fun artistic toys rather than top-tier business technology. He made a decision: he was going to change everything, the face of the company’s public persona from the ground up.

The outcome of that decision was this anti-establishment masterpiece:

According to the creative director at the agency who designed the advertisement, Jobs initially liked ‘The Crazy Ones’ pitch. Yet he was afraid that his reputation as an egotist might get him “skewered by the press” if he equated Apple with geniuses such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Ghandi. Then Jobs checked himself, saying two words that sent Apple soaring into the history books as the worldwide leader of consumer electronics and media sales:

“Screw it.”

You see, Jobs decided to forge ahead with this legendary advertisement because he’d already learned two valuable life lessons from his early years as an entrepreneurial thought leader:

He’d discovered the value of following his own instincts, rather than giving his power over to naysayers who had no stake in the outcome.

He’d learned to embrace his own unique style, and used that self-love to help the company he’d co-founded soar to unsurpassed heights.

This one commercial went on to generate such enormous buzz that it allowed for the historic and groundbreaking successful launch of the Apple iMacs in 1998.

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The ones who see things differently. While some may see them as ‘the crazy ones’, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world – are the ones who do.”

‘Maybe It’s My Fault’: Michael Jordan for Nike, 2008

Nike and ‘Air’ Jordan have an iconic relationship that dates back to 1984 when the sport’s legend laced up a pair of black and red Airships during his rookie preseason. MJ was told in no uncertain terms by the NBA to lose his revolutionary style and conform to his team’s color scheme, as per the rules.

The ‘Banned’ commercial that resulted was a bold move by Jordan, who hadn’t yet shown the world just how it’s done.

His audacity struck many at the time as being overly arrogant, but nearly 25 years later another collaborative project took place between the retail giant and the free throw genius which revealed the secret behind Jordan’s unshakable certainty so many years ago.

As this enlightening advertisement reveals, it was Jordan’s self-confidence and not his arrogance that instigated his decision to stand his ground against the world’s most powerful professional basketball organization. Here’s what we came to understand about this Master Life Manifestor:

Back in 1984 he already knew that his future success was ensured because he’d done the gritty, humbling, limit-pushing hard work that is a requirement of triumph. Every single day.

He’d experienced a life full of failures born from his attitude of risk-taking, and so had learned firsthand that these losses are simply signposts to future successes.

You see, Michael Jordan spent his early years not taking ‘no’ for an answer. That’s why he didn’t even blink when NBA commissioner David Stern declared his sneakers forbidden. He took that rejection, turned it around to made Nike and himself immense profits – and got some new shoes in the process.

With the October release of the Air Jordan XXXIII, it’s good to look back and celebrate Michael Jordan’s prowess both on and off the court. This illuminating quote reveals the true tale of just how champions are made:

“Maybe it’s my fault, maybe I made you think my highlights started at the free throw line and not in the gym. Maybe I made you think that …my game was built on flash and not fire. Maybe it’s my fault that you didn’t see that failure gave me strength. Maybe I led you to believe it was easy. Or maybe you’re just making excuses.” – Michael Jordan

Public speaking is the #1 fear in the world. In some studies, people have said they’d rather die than speak in public.

Can you believe that?

The majority of people hate public speaking because the fear that is associated with speaking in front of a live audience.

That’s why I personally admire anyone who speaks in public especially motivational speakers like Tony Robbins, Jack Canfield, and others.

To not only get up in a room full of strangers but to help people make massive change is extraordinary. Luckily, you don’t have to be Tony or Jack to become an awesome public speaker.

Use these public speaking tips to get rid of the fear of public speaking and start helping others make changes in their lives.

8 Public Speaking Techniques

1. Feel The Fear and Do It Anyway

Public speaking is one of the five biggest fears in life. Most people think of top public speakers and assume that they don’t get nervous but most of them that’s not true.

One of the most sought out speakers, Mel Robbins, said she still gets nervous before every event. And she speaks all over the world!

Instead of using this fear against her, she uses it to her advantage. As she said her best-selling book, The 5-Second Rule, “Your brain doesn’t know the difference between fear and anxiety. It’s up to you to let your brain know you’re excited, not scared.”

2. Only Speak About What You Know | Public Speaking Techniques

The easiest way to get flustered, nervous and want to run off stage is if you don’t know what you’re talking about. Only agree to do public speaking on topics that you know a ton about. Keep your message simple.

Don’t try to become an expert about a topic you know nothing about the day before the event. Start with a core message around one or two topics and go from there. The last thing you want is to feel overwhelmed when you’re on stage.

3. Convince Yourself, Not the Audience | Public Speaking Techniques

So many people make this mistake when they start public speaking. They try to sell the audience on their message to the audience. This is the wrong approach.

All they need is to believe that you believe what you’re saying. This simple tweak will reframe how you prepare and make it easy to speak on stage.

4. Use Stories, Not Stats | Public Speaking Techniques

If you want to be remembered for more than a day, you have to learn how to tell stories, not share facts with your audience. People attending will get bored if you’re throwing stats at them over and over again.

Instead, you should try to become a master storyteller. Not only will this help you stay on topic but it’ll flow more natural than repeating a bunch of numbers from a survey or study. Telling stories is one of the oldest ways of sharing messages with other people.

Not only will your audience remember you but you’ll have more fun and find yourself much less nervous.

5. Keep Your Message Simple | Public Speaking Techniques

The old saying, “keep it simple stupid” really applies to public speaking as much as anything. If you have a super complicated topic or a 14 step process for an audience it’ll confuse you and the audience.

People can only consume and digest a certain amount of information in one day, especially in a multi-speaker event. Before you go on stage, remind yourself of the core message you want people to remember.

Remind yourself of how your knowledge and speech can help them take action to improve their lives. If you’re using any slides make sure they are simple as well.

Don’t have a ton of slides with a lot of words and graphics. Less is more when it comes

6. Use Authority To Convey Your Message | Public Speaking Techniques

If you’re just starting in public speaking, I’m sure you are beyond nervous. But how you show up to the stage will greatly affect your confidence and ease your fears. Pay attention to your body language is impacting your message.

Your words will resonate with the audience if you’re physiology is the right state. Make sure your chin is up, you’re speaking confidently, and your posture matches as well.

Before you head out on stage take a few deep breaths and affirm your greatness to yourself.

7. Create a Power Ritual Before Heading On Stage | Public Speaking Techniques

Another awesome public speaking technique is one that Tony Robbins does before every event. Backstage, he jumps on a rebounder (basically a mini-trampoline) to adjust his physiology and increase his energy.

Then, he repeats a mantra that he’s used over and over again to get him into a peak state. Despite speaking to millions of people over 40 years he still does this simple ritual.

While you don’t need a rebounder, you should create a similar ritual. One that builds confidence in yourself and your ability before going on stage. Whether it’s an affirmation of “I am confident, I am worthy, and I am impacting others”, physical activity or something else.

Create a trigger before speaking that builds energy and excitement.

8. Strive to Improve | Public Speaking Techniques

If you’re like most people, you want to be great at something instantly. But public speaking is like any skill, it takes time to get great.

Give yourself permission to get better over time. It’s okay if you’re not great at the start.

Steve Jobs is my favorite example of this. I’m sure you know him as the epic speaker that delivered keynotes to unveil the hottest and industry-changing products in the world. But it wasn’t always like that for Steve.

In fact, he used to get so nervous before interviews and speaking that’d he have to throw up beforehand. The thought of public speaking terrified him it made him physically sick. And now he’s regarded as one of the greatest CEO speakers ever.

Remember, the goal of public speaking is to get your message out and change lives. If you can get one person in the audience to use your words and take action, you’re well on your way to becoming a world-class speaker.

Whether you want to become the top motivational speaker on the planet or just a better manager of your team, it’s 100% possible with these tips. Remember, it’s okay to feel nervous. Don’t let that be a reason that holds you back from sharing your words with the world.

As Mark Twain said, “There are two kinds of speakers, those who are nervous and those who are liars.” Use these public speaking techniques to master the stage and transform your audience.

Are you starting to feel like you’re in the wrong relationship? Is your relationship is making you better or are you simply going through the motions?

A close relationship with the right person is vital to your health, happiness, and fulfillment. Your relationship can make or break how you interact and engage with the world on a daily basis.

Yet so many people stay in the wrong relationship because they are too afraid of leaving. So many people aren’t happy but too scared to try and find anything else.

If you think you’re in the wrong relationship here are five surefire ways to tell.

1. You Don’t Spend Time Together (and don’t try too)

Life gets busy. Work, family, friends, events and everything else take up a ton of time. But if you’re not scheduling time with your partner then you’re probably going to fail.

If you aren’t spending time with your other half and aren’t concerned about it, what’s the point of keeping it going? Your partner is someone to share life with, not just a roommate.

2. You Don’t Trust Each Other

Trust is hard to get and easy to give away. If you aren’t trusting your partner it’s a huge red flag. Not only will this lack of trust lead to other issues, but it will also make the entire relationship problematic.

If you can’t communicate openly about trust issues its a sign that you’re probably in the wrong relationship.

3. Your Goals Don’t Align

I’m sure you first met you talked about your future and goals as individuals. As you dated longer or maybe even moved in, I’m sure you talked about your future goals of careers, travel, marriage or kids.

But if you and your partner no longer share your dreams it might be a sign that you’re in the wrong relationship. If one person wants to travel the world while the other wants a stable family life and 9-5 careers, the relationship is going to have problems.

Make sure you constantly check in and have goals that align together.

4. You’ve Stopped Making Effort

As Tony Robbins once said, “If you always do the little things that you did in the beginning, there will never be an end.” And he’s 100% right.

If you’ve stopped making effort to do the little things as time has gone on, you’re probably in the wrong relationship. You should want to do the little quirky, fun things you did in the beginning.

Sure, it might evolve in some capacity but its so important to always make the effort. If you’ve stopped trying and don’t care then it’s probably time to move on.

5. You Fantasize About Being With Other People

Yes, emotional cheating is still cheating. If you find yourself envisioning a better life, even if it’s with a fake romantic partner, it’s a sign that you are not fulfilled by your current relationship.

You should be able to speak with your partner about problems you’re having. Life’s short. Don’t spend time in the wrong relationship that isn’t fulfilling. It’s selfish to both you and your partner.

Communicate your thoughts open and honestly to give yourself the best chances to succeed. If it doesn’t work, at least you got everything out and won’t hold any regret in the future.

John Maxwell is a best-selling author who has helped shaped millions of lives around the world. His books are often about leadership and have provided motivation to people from all walks of life as his books have been published in over 50 languages!

He is most famous for his work in the leadership niche as he developed the “5 Levels of Leadership.” This technique is used by some of the most successful leaders in the world. If you’re a manager at work, run your own business or a parent, these John Maxwell quotes are for you.

Use these John Maxwell quotes to find the leader within you.

“A man must be big enough to admit his mistakes, smart enough to profit from them, and strong enough to correct them.” – John C. Maxwell

Admitting when you’re wrong can be hard to do. But if you want to be a great leader, you have to own up when you make a mistake. This will make you better and set an example for the people you’re leading.

“Teamwork makes the dream work, but a vision becomes a nightmare when the leader has a big dream and a bad team.” – John Maxwell Quotes

You’ll never accomplish as much as you truly can if you do everything alone. While it’s okay to have a strong work ethic you can’t do it all. You have to learn how to build a team of people to help you grow your vision.

When you’re building a team, find people that share the same vision that you have. While they don’t all need to be exactly like you, they should be crystal clear on the vision.

“A successful person finds the right place for himself. But a successful leader finds the right place for others.” – John Maxwell Quotes

If you’re a leader, you need to learn how to develop and work with your team. It’s up to you to learn how to make them better. Get to know them, figure out how they take feedback, and make sure your actions match your ultimate vision.

“The difference between average people and achieving people is their perception of and response to failure.” – John Maxwell Quotes

Failure is the fastest road to success. But most people fail and stop trying.

But ultra-successful people learn from failure. They understand that failure is how you adapt, get better, and progress toward the goal. Don’t let failure stop you, look at it as a way to learn what didn’t work so you can accomplish your biggest goals.

“People who use time wisely spend it on activities that advance their overall purpose in life.” – John Maxwell Quotes

Everyone has the same 24 hours. If you have big goals but are watching 2-3 hours of TV each night you’re not committed to making them happen. Try to structure your day with 85% of the time in helping you achieve your vision.

“As a leader, the first person I need to lead is me. The first person that I should try to change is me.” – John Maxwell Quotes

Change starts from within. If you want to change the world, start by changing yourself. Only then can you go out and help change others.

“A great leader’s courage to fulfill his vision comes from passion, not position.” – John Maxwell Quotes

Passion is needed when you’re an entrepreneur, parent or someone trying to achieve big goals. Otherwise, it’ll be incredibly easy to quit when things get tough.

But if you’re passionate, you can make it happen even when it seems impossible to succeed.

Use these John C Maxwell quotes to learn the habits and skills to lead yourself. Only then can you truly achieve greatness, lead others, and impact the world.

Tom Kolditz, author of In Extremis Leadership: Leading As If Your Life Depended On It, retired Brigadier General and Dean of the Doerr Institute for Leadership, has researched and analyzed the performance of leaders “in extremis” situations. In this article we will discuss some of the leadership lessons he gained from his experience leading Korean Augmentee Soldiers and US Army soldiers in the 1990s.

Do not negotiate organizational values | Combat Bullying

The role of the leader is to enforce the value structure of the organization. When it comes to values, you cannot negotiate. You must demand that values are adhered to by every member of the organization. Yes, there are other matters that you can negotiate on. But when it comes to institutional values, they are not up for debate.

Do not tolerate cliques or people feeling like they’re superior to others | Combat Bullying

Cliques and bullies can greatly disrupt the ebb and flow of any organization. Cliques prevent open communication between team members. Miscommunication can cause resentment and ultimately a barrier between members on opposing sides of the clique. If you allow cliques to operate for an extended period. The damage can become irreparable. As mentioned in the previous point, this should not be up for negotiation because cliques are generally against most organization’s values since they are not inclusive.

Look for the best in people | Combat Bullying

Tom’s Korean troops were unfortunately bullied, and ostracized by his American soldiers. His American soldiers would look down on, degrade and bully his Korean soldiers. This was a very big problem, because his Korean troops became very dejected, depressed, and even contemplated deserting or committing suicide. Tom knew that he had to do something, and do something fast. He knew that his Korean soldiers were really smart, and that they were good with technology and automation. He soon realized that the American soldiers were actually intimidated by the Koreans, and were an ego threat for them, which was why they bullied the Koreans.

Think outside the box | Combat Bullying

Tom decided to resolve this problem by turning the tables around completely. Tom required all coordination in the Korean countryside to be done in Hangul, the native Korean language. This made the American soldiers completely dependant on the Korean soldiers. Thus the Koreans eventually became the top commodity in every one of his hundred person subunits. Over the course of two or three months, Tom’s Korean troops went from being sort of second class citizens in a dysfunctional relationship with the US soldiers, to being highly valued cohesive team members.

Conclusion | Combat Bullying

There is a lot we can learn from Tom Kolditz’ experience in the military. We can easily re-apply his experience in our own personal lives. Whether it be in the workplace or in our personal relationships with friends and family. You must determine your organizational and personal values, and stick to them. Do not tolerate bullying or cliques. And lastly look for the best in people. By changing how we deal with our colleagues, friends, and family, we are slowly but surely making the world a better place to live in.

Do you have an introvert personality type? Or are you more of an extrovert or maybe even a combination of the two (known as an ambivert)?

There isn’t one type that is better than the others. In fact, each one has their own advantages and disadvantages.

People are extroverts have no problem striking up a conversation with anyone. They don’t mind leading groups, talking to strangers, and having an outgoing personality.

But introverts don’t excel in these types of situations as well. They tend to prefer to be alone, avoid large groups, and keep to themselves.

Here are the three biggest challenges of being an introvert and strategies to help you get outside your comfort zone.

How To Thrive As An Introvert

1. Keeping Friends And Loved Ones Close

If you have an introvert personality type I’ll bet the majority of your friends are also introverts. And that’s okay.

But sometimes, I’m sure you stumble into a conversation with an extrovert and feel outside your comfort zone. If you find yourself in this situation be open and honest with the person.

Let them know you’re more on the shy side sometimes so your new friend doesn’t think you’re ignoring them every time they invite you out with friends. Do your best to open and honest with people so you can maintain healthy friendships and relationships.

2. Being A Part Of Big Groups

To extroverts, large groups are an opportunity to shine. It’s their playground to mingle, network, and be rewarded for being outgoing. But this can be a nightmare situation if you’re an introvert.

If you’re in the introvert camp you might feel anxiety, uncomfortable, and see your energy levels drop rapidly. You might even avoid being in groups altogether.

But never being a large group setting can be difficult for your personal and professional advancement. Instead, you need to still interact with groups but try these two methods to make the situation more bearable.

Create a Deadline

Humans thrive on deadlines. Think back to the last time you took a vacation and had so much to do before you left. While it seems impossible you always seem to get it done.

The same goes for your next networking event or large group setting. Establish a deadline before you go to meet up.

If you usually see your energy drop after 90 minutes, plan to stay for 60-75 minutes. Make the most of your time!

Have an Agenda

Once you have a clear deadline on how long you can stay and engage with others, set a goal for what you are trying to accomplish. Is there someone specific you want to seek out? Is there someone who can help your business or career?

Actively seek them out first. Try and speak with the most important individual first when your energy is the highest.

3. Difficulty Expressing Yourself

The last thing you might struggle with as an introvert is expressing yourself to loved ones. Sometimes you might need extra time to fully communicate how you are feeling. And that’s ok, just make sure to communicate this clearly earlier than later in the relationship.

Be super open about how you best express yourself. Maybe practice the conversation beforehand, have a note handy or find another method to come prepared.

Next Steps

If you have an introvert personality type, understand that you can still excel in social situations if you plan ahead and make a conscious effort. If you’re trying to become more of an extrovert, start hanging out with people you want to act like and actively get out of your comfort zone.

Yes, this will feel uncomfortable at first. But if you truly want to change you have to stress yourself in a positive way. Know what you’re trying to achieve, make a plan, and become the best version of yourself.

Today, you’ll learn the universal principles that govern every human being and can take you to your goals faster than you ever imagined.

But before we unveil the treasure, here are the best Stephen Covey quotes to inspire you to greatness:

1. Trust is the glue of life. It’s the most essential ingredient in effective communication. It’s the foundational principle that holds all relationships. – Stephen Covey Quotes

2. Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

3. Live out of your imagination, not your history.

4. Start with the end in mind.

5. The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule but to schedule your priorities. – Stephen Covey Quotes

6. The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.

7. Most of us spend too much time on what is urgent and not enough time on what is important.

8. You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage — pleasantly, smilingly, nonapologetically, to say “no” to other things. And the way you do that is by having a bigger “yes” burning inside. The enemy of the “best” is often the “good.”

9. I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decisions.

10. Love is a verb. Love – the feeling – is the fruit of love the verb or our loving actions. So love her. – Stephen Covey Quotes

11. When you show deep empathy toward others, their defensive energy goes down, and positive energy replaces it. That’s when you can get more creative in solving problems.

12. The more people rationalize cheating, the more it becomes a culture of dishonesty. And that can become a vicious, downward cycle. Because suddenly, if everyone else is cheating, you feel a need to cheat, too.

13. Every human has four endowments – self awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom… The power to choose, to respond, to change. – Stephen Covey Quotes

Stephen Covey’s Top 10 Rules For Success

1. Use The Lighthouse Principles to Maintain Integrity

Lighthouse principle refers to the laws of nature that govern life.

For example:

One of the natural laws states that the four parts of a human being need to work in synergy for us to have a fulfilling life and inspire others. These four parts are – body, mind, heart and spirit.

Some other laws that govern life –

Give love to receive love.

Stay away from toxic people, substances, and technology to stay mentally fit.

Idleness warps the mind. Invest your energy in a worthy goal.

Sleep, exercise, and diet – take care of the basics to feel physically healthy.

These laws govern every single person in the world regardless of what their personal values are. Your job is to never go against these laws – the lighthouse principles.

2. Use The 90/10 Principle to Always Be Under Control

People often get frustrated when things aren’t working well for them. But according to Stephen Covey, life is 10 percent what happens to you and 90 percent how you respond to it.

So your circumstances are the way they are because of your own choices. Only when you take full responsibility for your life will you understand how to grow as a person.

Sounds harsh?

This is not hard to implement. It feels good to know that YOU are in control and if you make different choices, your life will turn around. This also shows in one of the best Stephen Covey quotes:

3. Use the Law of the Harvest to Create What You Desire

The Law of Harvest says that you reap what you sow.

Here’s the deal:

With this principle, Stephen Covey wants you to know that building a strong work ethic and being a giver in relationships are the seeds you should plant today to enjoy life tomorrow.

Just as the farmers who don’t know whether the harvest will be good in the coming season, you should also weigh the impact of each action, save for worst-case scenarios and plan ahead to reach your important goals.

4. Build Your Values With Truenorth Principle

A compass has a true north which is external, objective, and doesn’t depend on the internal state of the compass. Similarly, there are laws of life that don’t change with your personal values.

What’s the bottom line?

Stephen Covey says that you must build your personal values with deep respect for the “True North” principles.

For example:

If you are highly ambitious, you must respect the natural laws of hard work, working with a team and studying the greats.

5. Put First Things First

Covey says that people spend half of their time on urgent, but not important tasks. To live a successful and fulfilling life, you must know your purpose and highest priorities.

When you understand your vision, purpose, and highest priorities, you will be able to let go of the things that don’t matter to you.

6. Practice Empathic Listening

Relationships are essential for survival and fulfillment.

But most of us wait for our turn to speak while talking to others. But if you really want to be understood, you have to understand the other person first. Deeply feel their emotions so that you can effectively influence them.

This is illustrated in one of the greatest Stephen Covey quotes:

Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

7. Sharpen the Saw to Reach New Levels of Growth

Stephen Covey says that “you should preserve and enhance the greatest asset you have — you”.

A great example:

Many employees feel that they produce more for less for their organizations. This makes them feel exhausted, mechanical, and insensitive.

Here’s the deal:

The right way is to renew and nourish yourself on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels by activities such as eating healthy, exercising, making meaningful social connections, reading, writing, being out in the nature, meditating, art, prayer and so on.

8. Inspiration Over Jackass Theory

Choose to work with people who appreciate you for making unique contributions and reward you for your creative potential.

The Jackass theory says that if you produce, you get the carrots and you don’t, you get beaten by a stick. But human contribution doesn’t deserve this kind of treatment.

Obvious, right?

Don’t work for people who treat you like a machine or a means of getting work done.

9. Find Your Voice

According to Stephen Covey, you were bestowed with certain gifts, talents, and intelligence that you need to uncover with decisive action. You need to discover your gifts and use them to live a passionate and fulfilling life.

How it’s done:

Covey says that you need to ask yourself the following four questions to find your voice.

What are you good at? (Your Mind)

What do you love to do? (Your Heart)

What need you can serve? (Your Body)

What brings meaning in your life? Become aware of the things that call you to a greater purpose. What does your intuition say you should do? (Your Spirit)

10. Circle of Influence

What does it mean?

Circle of influence refers to the things you can control: making progress at work, nurturing your relationships, taking care of your physical body etc.

And the circle of concern consists of the things you can hardly control: terrorism, the weather, what others think about you, animal cruelty, etc.

The bottom line:

Covey says that you should invest all your energy in the circle of influence, because that’s where you can make progress and get the fulfillment that every person seeks in life.

How to Succeed in Life: Lessons From Tony Robbins Book Unlimited Power

Throughout his life, Tony Robbins has taught people how to succeed in life. He has coached the most influential people we know – Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton, Oprah, Serena Williams, Princess Diana and Mother Teresa.

He has trained Olympic athletes, CEOs and heads of States to perform at peak levels and he has saved people from committing suicide. Behind his great feats lie a deep understanding of what makes people tick.

He is truly a force of nature.

In Unlimited Power, he shows us how to succeed in life and career by mastering our own mind.

Here are the most important lessons from the book on how to succeed in life:

1. Communication is Power

Robbins says that communication is power. It determines how we experience the world and how the world experiences us. With great communication skills comes the power to influence others.

All great people including Martin Luther King, John. F. Kennedy, Franklin Roosevelt, and Mahatma Gandhi used their words to influence millions of people.

According to Robbins, communication is of two forms – external and internal.

External Communication

How we communicate with others determines our success in society. Think about it. From cracking job interviews to negotiating business deals, communication is an integral part of achieving success in life. Mutual trust and respect is the foundation of growth in all kinds of work.

Internal Communication

This one is generally overlooked. According to Robbins, how you feel – happy or sad, is because of how you communicate with yourself. If you master internal communication, you can change how you feel, act and live.

2. Ultimate Success Formula

Everyone wants to know how to succeed in life. The formula consists of four simple steps:

Define exactly what you want to achieve.

Create a strategy and take action.

Measure how successful your strategy was.

Tweak your strategy until you achieve your goal.

Life is like a river. It’s moving, and you can be at the mercy of the river if you don’t take deliberate, conscious action to steer yourself in a direction you have predetermined.”

3. Use Modelling to Succeed at Anything

Robbins gives us a smart answer to how to succeed in life. According to him, we don’t have to reinvent the wheel, we just need to model the behaviors and strategy of those who have already succeeded.

But how?

Use this to achieve anything

If you want to achieve any goal, there’s a simple process you can use to achieve the results they did.

The five-step modeling process that shows how to succeed in life:

Find a top performer and study their strategy and actions

Implement the same strategy and actions

Visualize the top performer at their peak performance producing outstanding work

Visualize again, making yourself as the top performer, doing the same things

Go get it. Take action.

To meet your needs on every level, first identify your values. Make a list of everything that matters to you, such as love, honesty, freedom, beauty and creativity.

4. Rule Your Mind To Nuke Negativity

To succeed in life, you need to rule your mind. If your mind rules you, you can never commit to action and achieve your goals.

Here’s where you learn how to master internal communication.

There are many ways you can do this:

A. Reframe Negative Events And Feel Positive Instantly

Did you ever fail at a game and felt really bad, I-want-to-die bad? It happens with everyone. But the truth is that any situation is as bad as you make it. If you lose a game, you can tell yourself, “Doesn’t matter. I had fun.”

The point is:

“You can choose what an event means to you, instead of accepting by default that it’s bad for you .”

So when you face a negative situation, reframe it as a positive one. Ask yourself, “What’s great about it?” or “If I go through this, I will become stronger.” Always remember, reality is what you perceive it is.

You will learn how to succeed in life only when you start seeing things positively.

B. Use Anchoring to Feel Happy and Get Things Done

Anchoring refers to creating a desirable response by using a particular stimulus. We always feel sad while listening to a sad song. And we always feel happy when we meet a beloved friend. In these examples, friend and song are stimuli, and how we feel is our response.

Meaning?

When we experience a certain stimulus, we create a certain response in our mind. And we can use this simple anchoring mechanism to our advantage.

How to use this:

Suppose you love working out and it makes you feel strong and unstoppable. So, whenever you feel low, or too tired to do important work, you can do a quick ten-minute workout to make yourself feel strong and unstoppable.

C. Use Swish Pattern to Break Bad Habits

You can use the same anchoring mechanism to quit a bad habit. A swish pattern helps you build positive habits by changing the mental image you hold of your bad habits.

To use a swish pattern:

First, visualize the habit you want to change. Make an internal representation. If it is smoking, visualize yourself smoking.

Now imagine how you will look and feel once you make that change. In the case of smoking, you may feel yourself feeling more energetic, your face glowing, etc.

Swish the two images, swapping the images mentally, making a “whoosh” sound loudly with excitement

Repeat the process many times.

We know this is crazy.

Here’s EXACTLY how to do the swish, as explained by Tony Robbins:

“Start by making a big bright picture of the behavior you want to change. Then, in the bottom right-hand corner of that picture, make a small dark picture of the way you want to be. Now take that small picture, and in less than one second, have it grow in size and brightness and literally burst through the picture of the behavior you no longer desire. As you do this process, say the sound “whoosh” with all the excitement and enthusiasm you can.”

How does this work?

Your brain forms a new neural pattern: See the old -> Whoosh -> Do the new

And as a result, you associate pleasure with the new habit instead of the old habit. You become stronger, smarter, and happier. As you build positive habits, you learn how to succeed in life and achieve your goals with full confidence.

5. Use Physiology to Feel Happy and Strong

Physiology is another way to get into a great mental state. Physiology here refers to your posture, your facial expressions, and how you use your physical body.

For example, in a depressed state, a person would be looking down, shoulders dropped, breathing shallow and voice weak.

The best part:

You can create ecstasy at will by changing your physiology.

To create ecstasy, simply laugh, sing, or dance. You need to act as if you were ecstatic and you will be ecstatic.

We’ve actually shown how Tony Robbins uses this tactic to overcome negativity.

Physiology is very important because it leads to a strong or weak mental state which further leads to strong or weak results. Your task is to make your physiology work for you, not against you. Go for a run, workout, take a cold shower – and quickly change your state from sad to happy and energetic.

So now that you know how to succeed in life, implement the lessons and see your life change – one goal at a time.

Haters and Critics: How to Deal with People Judging You and Your Work

How do you feel when someone criticizes you? Hurt, angry or both? Most people turn defensive, get their blood boiling or worse, just walk out of the situation. Dealing with criticism like a pro, however, is a good thing. It helps you identify your weaknesses and open your eyes to areas of improvement. Besides, when you are calm in the midst of a storm, it helps you build relationships and become successful at work.

So, what can you do instead of being defensive? The next time you come head to head with your haters, take a deep breath first to calm down and use any of these 10 ways to deal with the encounter graciously.

Change Behavior to Change Attitude

If your manager is constantly nitpicking on your weak spots, it’s time to change somebody’s attitude. You’ll be surprised to know you can change your manager’s attitude by changing his behavior. This is the Benjamin Franklin effect. He did this with his haters. One critic was at his neck, criticizing all the time and to break the tension, Benjamin did the most unexpected thing.

He asked to borrow a rare book from this critic’s library. Knowing Benjamin was an avid reader and collector, the critic was honored that he asked and lend the book. Benjamin returned the book a week later with a thank you card. When the critic did Benjamin a favor, it changed his attitude toward Benjamin. They become lifelong friends right up to Benjamin’s death.

Look in from the Outside

When you have an encounter with your hater, take a moment to step out of the scene. Imagine you are looking at the scene from a third person’s perspective. This will help you from taking things personally. You can feel less pain from critics when you view the situation from the outside. It gives you a chance to observe what is being said instead of focusing on the why.

Observe and Identify Patterns

Do you have a friend who is a constant downer? This is someone who has no compliments to give, but only hateful remarks. It doesn’t matter what you are happy about or excited about, this person will always shrug it away saying “it’s only normal” or “everybody does that”.

What you need to do is observe this friend when he or she is with your other friends in the group. Most likely you will see the same reactions from this friend to others too. When you notice this, remember the problem lies with your friend. It’s their own ideas, relationships, and experiences of life that nudge them to be critical of everyone.

Remember the Good Intentions

Is the constant criticism coming from your loved ones? It’s harder to deal with haters and critics within your family or close friends. For instance, Jane and John went for an international vacation. Everything planned and thought through, they had a good time and everything. Except, Jane was in her second trimester and so, they got some flack from their loved ones.

There were two reactions to this vacation idea. One that openly criticized them for being “neglectful” and other group stayed neutral. If you find your loved ones barking at you for something you have well thought of, then remember they do it from a concern for your well-being.

Listen to Catch Validity

From everything that is being said, there must be something that is useful. These are the little gold nuggets of criticism that help you catch your weaknesses and areas of improvement. Sieve through the conversation to catch those useful bits. For instance, “internet trolls” are those who offer nothing constructive to say. They want to pass judgement and unsolicited opinions. Sometimes, haters just want to say hurtful things so you can ignore those.

Understand and Ask for Advice

You only have a few seconds before you react in an encounter. These are crucial moments to decide how you want to pave the conversation. Constructive criticism is a good thing. The benefits are many, improving your product, your skills, ideas, relationships and even expectations of your manager. So, when you find yourself in an encounter the best way to deal criticism like a pro is to step back and ask for advice. If your parents judge your spending habits, ask them for advice for money management.

Remember the Definition of Insanity

Albert Einstein once said insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. You need to remember this in case you put yourself into the hands of your critics over and over again. Sometimes, no matter what you say haters and critics will not change their opinion on the matter. There is no point in bringing up the topic in conversation again, only to be put down, again. See, you’d do it to get a validation to your points, but you know what? Sometimes, it’s just not about you.

Show Kindness

The Benjamin Franklin Effect talks about how to change another’s behavior to get them to change their attitude. In much the same way, you can also show kindness. People do favors for the people they like. You can trick your mind into liking the person by doing nice things for them, even if they are harsh critics of your work. Being kind is about graciously reacting in an encounter. So, show grace and mercy to your haters.
