The sunk cost fallacy is common in our lives from something as simple as a person letting unworn clothes clutter their closet just because they’re expensive, to people holding on to stock even after it has lost value.

According to psychologist Daniel Kahneman, the sunk cost fallacy is commonplace because “organisms that placed more urgency on avoiding losses over maximizing opportunities were more likely to pass on their genes.” Therefore the possibility of losses is a stronger motivator than the likelihood of gains.

Employment and Business

In 1956, the Concorde project began intended to design a supersonic airliner. The last Concorde flight was in 2003 despite the project having run into prohibitive cost overruns as far back as 1976. The endeavor would later be known as the Anglo/French misadventure and would be renowned for the valuable business lesson it offers. In the same way, most individuals base the decision to keep the business running based on past investments even when the financial growth is uncertain.

In employment, most people stick to dead-end jobs as they don’t want to jettison the sunk costs in terms of raises, promotions, and offers.

Education

College students keep putting themselves into debt even when they are not making much headway in their degree. Partners invest a lot of time, money, and emotions, and can’t see themselves with someone else. 1. In business, always ask yourself if you have a fighting chance, or it’s just a chance to fight. If it is the former, then go on, but if it is the latter, it might be time to pull the plug. Also, don’t make decisions based on previous investment but the financial viability of the business going forward.

2. Recognize that time, money, or any resource cannot be recovered, and it does not obligate you to continue investing in the future.

3. Realize sometimes the best decision is to quit. Though most perceive this as admitting failure, it is a sensible response when the goal is no longer viable. Keep working, but shift your focus.

4. In the words of Kenny Rogers, learn when to hold them and when to fold them. It takes more strength to admit you were wrong, there is no shame in making the best decision for yourself.

5. Finally, get the facts. There are instances where you want to stick it out in business or a career or degree but analyze the facts. Then make a decision based on the realities and not hearsay.

Twenty years ago Apple experienced incredible growth, tripling their stock price in just one calendar year.

Twenty-one years ago Apple was in trouble and headed towards failed obscurity.

What changed in those 12 months?

It was 1997. Co-founder Steve Jobs had been back at the company for just one year after having been ousted 12 years prior due to poor sales of his Macintosh concept. Now he was interim CEO of a company that was experiencing declining profits and a reputation for making fun artistic toys rather than top-tier business technology. He made a decision: he was going to change everything, the face of the company’s public persona from the ground up.

The outcome of that decision was this anti-establishment masterpiece:

According to the creative director at the agency who designed the advertisement, Jobs initially liked ‘The Crazy Ones’ pitch. Yet he was afraid that his reputation as an egotist might get him “skewered by the press” if he equated Apple with geniuses such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Ghandi. Have you ever wondered why some people see working for themselves as a great risk, while others see it as an absolute must?

Some people have what is called a “FIXED MINDSET” and some have a “GROWTH MINDSET”

Take for example, receiving critical feedback.
 Someone with a FIXED MINDSET might view it as a personal attack, and not learn anything from the feedback, or USE IT to improve or grow.
 While the one with a GROWTH MINSET might use the feedback to learn how to improve in the future.

These two mindsets are the reason you see PROBLEMS or CHALLENGES.

 These two mindsets can have a huge influence on your life

The two mindsets were first identified by Carol Dweck who wrote the book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success.
Let’s go over them in more detail:

The Two Types of Mindsets

1. Fixed Mindset

Fixed mindsets people might think “I’ve been this way and I’ll always be this way.”

The fixed mindset doesn’t see possibilities or opportunities. It sees things how they’ve always been, and expects that is how they will continue to be.

But of course, that just not true. You have the ability to change and improve ANY situation, as soon as you change and improve your MINDSET.

According to the author, “In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort.”

Fixed Mindset Examples

• Easily threatened when others around them are successful
• Shying away from challenges and projects that require more work
• Give up very easily when things go wrong
• Avoid failing at all costs because if they fail there is no way to succeed in the future. These individuals think their destiny is determined.

2. The Growth Mindset

Here’s how the author defined a growth mindset:

 “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.”

Those who live with a growth mindset tend to believe they can develop into anyone, and achieve anything through hard work and dedication.

These individuals think of tough situations as challenges, not threats. They see each obstacle as an opportunity to grow and develop.

While people with fixed mindsets tend to be negative and afraid of failing, people with a growth mindset are the exact opposite. They rarely fear failure as they know no failure is permanent and they usually bounce back very fast from any failure.

Growth Mindset Examples

• They seek out challenges to grow and become a better version of themselves.
• They use others achievements and successes as motivation to succeed.
• The persevere when things get difficult.
• They se feedback to their advantage. The sooner they can take feedback the sooner they can learn from it and make progress.
